NURS20160 Assessment 1
The Nurse Professional Assessment 1
Evidence-Based Patient Centred Practice Worksheet

Research Topic:
Creating the question
The case study of Mathew Ames indicated to a multiple aspects of nursing
intervention which was important and helpful for the quadruple amputation of
his limbs due to severe sepsis. However, one of the most important nursing
intervention which helped the patient to overcome his grievances and
complication after the amputation was the informed care provided by the
nursing professionals. The patient mentioned in the interview that despite his
inabilities and shock after his surgeries, the nursing professionals kept him
informed and helped him to overcome his mental complications due to which
he was able to overcome his complications and reciprocate the interventions
effectively.
What do you want to know?
I want to know the reason due to which the kind and ethical behaviour of the
nursing professionals was able to make the patient strong and accept his
current condition for the rest of his life by minimising his grievances. This
would be the primary aim of this paper.
Is this a quantitative (PICO) or qualitative question (PEO)?
As the research aims to understand the effectiveness of the process, using the
qualitative approach would be appropriate so that the quality associated
aspects of the patient centered informed care could be understood for the
patients who is suffering from critical health conditions, similar to Mr. Mathew.

I:
C:
O:
P: patients suffering from terminal or
severe health complications
E: to patient centered informed care
O: their health outcome would be
improved and they would be able to
follow the interventions
What is your PICO/PEO question?
The PEO question: Does the application of patient centered informed
care helps the patients with critical, severe or terminal illness to
improve their health outcome and help them to understand their
interventions?
What synonyms could you use for your
PICO/PEO search terms?
P: P: patients, population
I: E: patient centered care,
Informed care, patient
information sharing
C: O: improved outcome, improved
health and well-being
O:
Which databases will you use for your search?
1

NURS20160 Assessment 1
Pub Med, Science Direct, and Google Scholar.
What filters will you use for your search and why?
There are multiple filters that would be used for the conduction of search
strategy so that papers with appropriate and accurate findings could be found.
In this process, the first filter would be qualitative primary research papers so
that all the papers with qualitative approach and primary research papers
could be found. The second filter that would be implemented for the process is
time limit and the time limit selected for the paper would be the 2013 to 2019,
so that all the latest and accurate research findings could be used for the
development of the research findings. The third filter would be applying
inclusion and exclusion criteria for the paper so that fine tuning of the search
strategy helps to identify the effective means of the research paper and
analyses the effectiveness of it.

Do you need to refine your search?
Yes/No
No, as the keywords are restricting the
research finding process and refining
them would end up eliminating every
research process that deals with similar
research process or research question.
How have you refined your search?
Write out your next search here (if
necessary):

Do you need to refine your search?
Yes/No
The research key terms are very
accurate and the research papers that
have been found are effective in
answering the research question, hence
refining of this search was not
performed.

5 Articles and Analysis
APA reference Article 1:
Wong, P., Liamputtong, P., Koch, S., & Rawson, H. (2015). Families’
experiences of their interactions with staff in an Australian intensive care unit
(ICU): a qualitative study.
Intensive and Critical Care Nursing,
31(1), 51-63.
Does this article directly relate to your
PICO/PEO question? Yes/No
No.
If no – is there a good reason for
including it?
This research paper highlights an
importance aspect of care that is
completely associated with the
research question and the case
study of Mathew. Family plays an
important role in the intensive care
cases as they help the patient to
overcome their mental complications
and understand the broader
perspective of the intervention,
hence, families should be included in
care process and this research
highlights the effect of information
and communication on patients and
their families.
Where does the article fall on the
Evidence Pyramid?
This article falls on level 3A of the
evidence pyramid.

NURS20160 Assessment 1
Results: it was seen that with informed care and processes they were able to
understand the importance of the process and with supportive and
interpersonal skills, they were able to understand the effectiveness of the care
process, compared to poor communication skill and unsupportive care process.
How are the results useful to your question?
The results helped to answer an important part of the research question
developed for this paper as helped to understand the importance of effective
and supportive communication in intensive care units of hospitals. It helped to
understand that proper information sharing and support for the patient and
family members help them to overcome their healthcare interventions.
Can the results be applied to the Australian healthcare context?
The research process was conducted in Australian healthcare facilities and
hence, this research and its findings could be implemented in the Australian
healthcare context.
What are the limitations of the research?
The primary limitation that was analysed through the research analysis is the
intervention related aspects for the anxiety and distress of family members
while going through inclusive care process for their patients, hence, this should
be used as a future healthcare approach.
