Patients.

Background
A therapeutic nurse-patient relationship is helping in
nature based on mutual respect and trust, infusing
hope and faith and being sensitive to the spiritual,
emotional and physical needs of the patients (Health
Workforce Australia, 2014).
Effective relationship ensures psychosocial and
physical safety while providing optimal patient care
It revolves around unique needs of the patients.
To facilitate right nurse patient relationship and
effective work environment for nurses, the IOM
recommended Workforce deployment, management and
leadership, organizational cultures and work processes

Background
American Association for Critical Care
Nurses (AACCN) established certain
standards to sustain the professional
relationships like true collaboration, effective
communication and decision making, right
staffing, reliable leadership and recognition
of staff values (Hughes, 2008).
Emphasis is being given on Patient centered
care, evidence based practice and safety
culture. These factors contribute in positive
nurse patient relationship.

Overview
Nurse patient relationship is a significant issue to the
contemporary nursing practice, as the nurses are primarily
accountable for setting the purpose and structure of
relationship.
Unsuccessful Nurse Patient relationship directly lead to
stressful working environment, as well as physical and mental
health of the Nurse (Institute of Medicine of the National
Academies, 2004).
The nurses should use patient centered care to satisfy the
requirements of the patients and thus to develop the
environment safer for patients.
The nurses have to work under professional, legal, ethical and
personal confinements to respect the unique attributes of
every patient to understand their response to care.

Overview
Nurse patient relationship is often influenced
by the work environment factors like high
stress, increased workload and extended
working hours (Kieft, Brouwer, Francke and
Delnoij, 2014) .
Workplace and environmental issues result
into fatigue and high rate of medical errors.
Fatigue impairs the physical and mental
health of nurses which adversely affects the
patient safety.

How effective leadership can
resolve the Problem
I think that effective leadership can ensure
standard operating procedures, fair
organization climate, equal distribution of
resources and adequate training of staff.
Strong leadership provides strategic decision
making authority to implement the teamwork,
empowering and engaging the employees
towards improvements in all the spheres
Encouragement may be used as a leadership
technique to transform the perceptions about
safety and developing relationship.

My responsibilities as a New Graduate NurseI should use good communication skills to focus
on unique needs of the patient
I should learn to exhibit respect, genuineness,
empathy, trust and confidentiality during the
interaction
I should follow the instructions of Registered
Nurses
I need to respect the differences in
personalities and cultures of different patients
I need to express polite and respectful behavior
with patients while listening to them and
responding back

My responsibilities while educating peers
and patients
While educating the patients, peers and
families, I need to identify their needs
I need to express polite and respectful
behavior with patience while listening to
them and responding back.
I need to comply with the nursing models and
treatment prescriptions.
Through care, attention, inducing the
calmness and getting trust I can increase the
patient safety.

Scope of Practice, Legal, Ethical Boundaries
I should respect the boundary between therapeutic
and non professional relationship with patients.
Patient’s Autonomy, privacy and dignity should be
maintained during relationship.
The patients having speech problems, impaired
cognition, anxiety and depression may find difficult to
interact.
We should be able to detect such co morbidities.
I should provide competent, safer and ethical care in
different practice settings as per the Nursing
standards, legislation, code of conduct and employer
policies

How research and polices supported the
presentation
Effective relationship building requires multidisciplinary
collaboration, teamwork, knowledge and adequate
exposure.
These skills can be developed through collaborative
programs such as NNLI (Novice Nurse Leadership
Initiative) implemented in South Florida in 2006 (Dyess
and Sherman, 2011).
Evidence based Practice may help in developing safe
healthy workplace environment for nurses and patients.
I should provide equable and fair treatment to all the
patients irrespective of age, disability, sexual orientation,
economic status and citizenship (LSU of Alexandria, 2017).

Communicating the information through
presentation is easier to understand for the
audience of different educational
backgrounds
Aim of the presentation is to sum up the main
points about how improving the Nurse Patient
relationship improves the patient safety

How my presentation supported the peer, my role as leader?
I think that my presentation would have
answered all the doubts related to
therapeutic nurse patient relationship which
may influence the working environment and
can affect patient safety.
The information is presented in an
informative, logical and interesting way
easier to follow for the audience.

Conclusion
Factors like healthy work environment, better
nursing staff, high retention, low moral
distress and low rate of workplace violence
influence the patient outcomes and quality of
care
Effective Nurse patient relationship can
mitigate the negative impact of stress
Harmonious and supportive relationship is
highly appreciated by the patients
