INTRODUCTION
A senior hospital nurse Sister Sarah Kuteh was sacked for offering a Bible discussing
Christianity and offering to pray with patients before operations. Sarah was dismissed for
breaching guidelines even though her job consisted asking about their regional patients preparing
for surgery. A nursing and midwifery council hearing considered her fitness to practice this
spring, ruling she breached professional standards. But the people commented that Sarah is an
hard working, experienced and senior nurse facing a unfair punishment for only expressing her
faith in Christianity at workplace.
Values
1. Human rights
Sister Sarah Kuteh was following the human rights such as promoting human well-being
and dignity by making the patients comfortable. She was talking about Christianity in order to
develop strengths within patients before surgery.
2. Social justice
In order to make patient comfortable Sarah was discussing about religion of the patients
which she was doing since a long time with each and every patient. This is challenging the unjust
policies and practices about the nurse practices that states that nurses can not speak emotionally
with the patients as it makes them uncomfortable (Shafakhah and et.al, 2018). . But Sarah's job
was to make patients comfortable so she did what she felt right.
3. Professional integrity
The professional integrity of a nurse is concerned with upholding the values and
reputation of the profession. Maintaining professional boundaries and being professionally
accountable. Sarah was very hard working and experienced she never done any unfair practices
at workplace (McDermott-Levy, Leffers and Mayaka, 2018).
Ethical practices
Nurse Sarah was very effective in developing strong relationships with the patients, just
because making them comfortable and preparing them for surgery. Developing professional
relationships is a important ethical practice for a nurse. Another ethical practice that Sarah
considered in her job was empowering people. Sarah also used authority according to human

rights principles which is another ethical practice she considered while performing her job roles
and duties (Kaya and et.al., 2017).
GIBBS REFLECTION MODEL
1. Description – I observe that Sister Sarah Kuteh was very hard working and experienced
nurse but she was sacked for doing what she was asked to with respect to her job roles.
She just asked about their religion and faith in Christianity with the patients. Her job was
to make patients feel comfortable before surgery so that they feel confident. She just
offered praying to patients so that can feel calm and it made them happy. I think that it is
not a unfair practice according to human rights it is permitted to talk about religion with
the patients. Although, she was sacked and dismissed by the organisation she was
working in many people stood on behalf of her to support her.
2. Feelings – While going through Sarah's case I felt that she was not doing anything wrong
or unethical. I did not noticed any unfair practice performed by her as it was her duty to
make patients comfortable by talking to them. I felt that talking about religion and
Christianity is not a good reason for getting dismissed or fired by job. I felt that it was
injustice happened with sister Sarah. I came to know about various ethical practices and
values related to the nurses and patients relationships. It can happen with anybody at a
workplace.
3. Evaluation – The good thing about my experience in this report was the knowledge I
obtained about the nursing practices. I came to know the unfair and fair practices related
to nurses. On the other hand, there were several bad things which I also observed such as
injustice with sister Sarah. It was not at all right to fire or dismiss a nurse just because she
talked about Christianity, prayer and religion with the patients (Skela‐Savič, Hvalič‐
Touzery and Pesjak, 2017).
4. Analysis – I gained knowledge related to nursing practices and standards in order to
identify what was wrong in offering prayer and asking about faith in Christianity with the
patients. I went to various legal authorities and bodies to understand the legal rights and
laws related to the dismissal and incident.
5. Conclusion – In order to understand the rights and legal values related to nursing
practices I must have read the polices of the health care organisation and the job roles of

a nurse. It could help me to defend my point of view in a better way that there is nothing
wrong in talking about the religion and Christianity with the patients.
