1NURSE STAFFING RATIOS
Introduction:
Insufficient levels of nursing staff per experienced Registered Nurses are associated with greater
patient drop rates, diseases, medication mistakes and also death. In combination with the
problems of increasing infant scarcity, fewer nurses operate longer hours and care for sicker
patients, because of huge cuts in nursing budgets. This situation jeopardizes care by creating an
environment that drives nurses out of the nursing center (Tyler et al., 2013). Most healthcare
companies acknowledge that secure personnel can influence on patient security and quality. In
terms of the mandates of nursing ratios, many forces are at stake and struggles often arise when
efforts to enforce them are made.
Impacts of nurse staffing ratio on quality of care and patient safety in health care setting:
Adequate personnel are essential to maintain patient care quality. Study in 12 European and
American countries showed that improved working conditions and lower relations between
patients and the nurses enhance care quality, patient safety and patient satisfaction (Rahman &
Shamsudin, 2015). In addition, a greater departmental nursing ratio increases the time they spend
on the results of care with patients. Therefore, appropriate amount of staffing is necessary to
enhance patient care quality. Inadequate staffing, a care deficiency and a strong patient to
nursing relationship in private clinics in Malaysia can jeopardize the quality of care and the
safety of patients in medical and surgical centers. In one research in China, however, high patient
nurses ratio was negative for quality of care and work but not for the results from patient care
(Rahman & Shamsudin, 2015). This results increase the interest in studying the patient-to-nurse
ratio in a nation like Malaysia in Eastern Asia. However, a connection between elevated working
load and the quality of patient care can hardly be identified and associated factors that affect the

therapy process and results should be considered by patients and suppliers.
Professional standards of practice related to nurse staffing ratio:
ANA or American Nurses Association has been working with Avalere to investigate ideal care
models for patient outcomes improvement. ANA emphasize the main results that demonstrate
the importance of optimal staffing to provide quality patient care. ANA also investigate staff
models to broaden our thinking beyond the ratios between nurses and patients (ANA, 2019). In
order to provide quality patient care, it is essential to identify and maintain the suitable amount
and mix of care workers. Many studies show that greater RN concentrations and reduced rates of
negative patient results are associated. If the association of RN personnel and patient results is
not recognized by health care workers, it requires legislation and legislation. A Federal
regulation (42 Code of Federal Regulations (42CFR 482.23(b))has been established for some
moment, requiring that Medicare-certified hospitals "have sufficient numbers of registered
nurses, licensed (professional) nurses and other staff to provide all patients with nursing care as
necessary." (ANA, 2019) This nebulous language, and the ongoing inability of the Congress, the
Registered Nurse Staffing Act, to enact national legislation, has led States to take steps to
guarantee optimum healthcare services for their clients (ANA, 2019).
Different roles of nursing leaders and nursing managers for this scenario:
Medical management is something that needs appropriate abilities and resolve to do the duties.
Managers have a duty to manage health organizations by ensuring that employees perform their
roles. Managers in medical institutes are impacted by the problem of nursing ratios, because the
health care facilities are very likely to experience an increased risk of malfeasance. Managers
have the duty to evaluate and determine how they can assign and handle the health-care
professionals (Taylor, 2017). For example, the managers can choose to recreate the work

schedules in order to reduce burnout. Furthermore, the medical institution director should
guarantee that the staffs have enough recovery time before they start another shift when they care
for a big amount of clients (Taylor, 2017).
Additional aspects mangers and leaders would need to initiate to solve nurse staffing ratio:
The role of leadership in a nursing profession differs from management. For example, executives
are allocated their roles in a health care organization, but leadership is held in the employees
despite their situation. Leaders are responsible for motivating and inspiring individuals to
achieve their private and organizational objectives. Studies of the relationships between nursing
management and patient outcomes by various authors are intriguing. There is a clear connection
between health care management and the outcomes of patients (Roche, Duffield, Dimitrelis, &
Frew, 2015).
Leadership style with respect to nurse staffing ratio:
Transformation management includes a management style that inspires individuals, due to the
conduct of their leaders, to change for the better (O’Neill, 2013). Leaders are performing well
beyond their expectations; they don't focus primarily on what is best for the individuals. The
leaders of transformation show how they can inspire and motivate their fans; therefore, they
create high-performance employees. They create vision and motivate their employees. This
implies that if rulers adopt this strategy, things are accomplished much more closely in the
hospital. The management style also refers to the strategy for the nursing workforce focused on
empowerment and evaluation of nurses, resulting in the recruitment of extra, more skilled staff.
If nurses develop their abilities in technology literacy and improve their emotional intelligence

they have an opportunity for greater care and therapy (O’Neill, 2013).
Conclusion:
To conclude, there can be no negative environment for patients and nurses if there is a small
nurse-to-patient ratio in a medical organization. Leaders and executives often adopt different
approaches to ensuring effective health services. In developing a good environment, the differing
management styles and strategies are critical.
