Nursing and caring in the profession of nursing
Introduction
Nursing and caring are the entangled aspects of the nursing profession. Caring is showing
concern and compassion towards the patients in the process of healing therapy. Caring is a
vital feature of nursing. This assessment discusses caring in nursing, importance. This
assessment also analyses the difference between the care provided by the family and friends
and the nursing profession. Discussion on challenges being a nurse in caring for others helps
the nurse to improve professionally.
Caring and nursing
Caring is the essence of nursing practice. Exhibiting kindness and consideration in the
nursing practice ensures that physical illness and mental distress are taken care (Adams,
2016). Nurses are expected to confirm the physical, mental, psychological and social
wellbeing of the person. The caring attitude of the nurse helps in building an interpersonal
relationship with the patient and family. Inter-personal relationships with the patients
improve communication and aids in history collection and physical examination. It also
ensures the co-operation of the patient. Watson defines caring as the ideal aspect of the
profession that ensures protection, respect for the patient and therapeutical improvement of
the patient (Watson, & Woodward, 2010).
Caring is an integral part of the nursing profession which enhances the fundamentals of
nursing principles. Kindness is the act of caring which is essential for a patient-staff
relationship. Caring can be expressed in various forms. Commitment, conscience,
competence, compassion and confidence are the principles of caring- nursing practice. Caring
matters for the nursing profession as the nursing ethics and standards also confirms the same
(Bollig et al. 2015). The nurse has to demonstrate a caring attitude in the form of empathy,
communication, interpersonal relationship, open-mindedness, respectfulness, flexibility, and

reliability. Exhibiting a caring attitude is not an easy task for the nurses. The nurse has to
implement the theoretical knowledge, caring attitude, values, believes and ethics while caring
for a patient.
The nurse needs to provide patient centered and family-centered nursing care to ensure
speedy recovery of the patient. To care as an individual is the unprofessional caring which
involves no principles and ethics. To care as a nurse involves professionalism. The nurse will
care for the patient abiding by the nursing standards and professional ethics to ensure a
speedy recovery and therapeutic relationship in the health care profession. Personal caring for
family members and friends is the sympathetic caring in which the caregiver emotionally
attached to the person and exhibits caring in an unprincipled and unethical manner. The nurse
demonstrates caring in a professional manner to improve the health of the person. The nurse
has to aware of the nursing standards and ethics to ensure optimal nursing care for the patient.
The empathetic, compassionate and highly knowledgeable nurse can be competent and ensure
safety to the patient.
Challenges to caring
The nurse faces various challenges in providing optimal care in nursing practice. The nurses
face challenges like work-place violence, less staffing, and long working hours. The
challenges impact the caring attitude of the nurse and lead to the implementation of physical
healing therapy to the patient. Being compassionate is a challenging issue in nursing practice.
The nursing profession is considered to be a stressful and challenging occupation (Bramley,
& Matiti, 2014).The nurses are focused on the roles and responsibilities in nursing practice.
Showing compassion in all circumstances is the challenging aspect of implementing nursing
care. Exhibiting compassion equally to all the patients is an impossible act (Heffernan et al.
2010).

The strategy to ensure compassion in the nursing profession is implementing patient-centered
care. Patient-centered care ensures the physical healing and psychological comfort for the
patient. Patient-centered care improves the health condition of the patient and confirms both
patient satisfaction and ob satisfaction for the nurse. It ensures speedy recovery, less
hospitalization and less hospital bills (Rathert, Wyrwich, & Boren, 2013). Patient-centered
care helps the nurse to plan customized nursing care for each patient. Customization shows
that the needs of the patient are considered and cared for the betterment of the patient.
Conclusion
Caring is an essential feature of the nursing profession. Showing kindness can improve the
relationship between the patient and the health care profession. The nurses face various
challenges in implementing nursing care. Long working hours and workplace violence are
some of the issues that cause stress to nursing professionals. Implementing compassion in the
nursing profession can ensure caring in nursing practice. Compassion is showing kindness to
the patient and his family in the process of hospitalisation. It can also help in building the
interpersonal relationship between the patient and the nurse. Compassion aids in focus on
patient-centered care for the betterment of the patient and speedy recovery.
