NURSING ASSIGNMENT PAPER 2
Introduction
This assignment is geared towards analyzing the Pre and Post Clinical data of Frank
Wright, who has undergone a right total knee replacement. The paper will develop a prioritized
intervention which will be nurse initiated and collaborative interventions. This part will also
concentrate on the 24 hours of post-surgical care for the patient, which will involve coming up
with the clinical plan.
This paper will also indulge in identifying clinical issues as related to comorbidities.
Problems in correlation with morbidities that are to be discussed are smoking, hypertension, high
cholesterol, and obstructive sleep apnea. The focus will be mainly on clinically related issues on
smoking and Obstructive sleep apnea. The interventions which nurses would initiate to decrease
risks of clinical deterioration will also be covered. The last part of this paper will be the
discharge plan of Frank and then the conclusion of the entire essay.

Relevant Assessment: The pertinent
assessments of this case are pain level
and capillary refill. As an illustration,
Frank will be monitored for one to two
hours after the surgery to ensure that
the anesthesia wears off. This involves
the first step of clinical reasoning
The patient
will verbalize
the pain level

(Rawal, 2016).
Some of the prioritized interventions are as
highlighted below. The first one is Monitoring,
which is one of the interventions for knee
surgery, with monitoring it involves observing
the respiration rate, chest breath, and chest
depth. This Monitoring is done to ascertain the
effectiveness of the respiration so that in case

cycles. After that, the nurse will watch
over the patient to determine the
therapies to be performed. After the
anesthesia wears off and the patients
are still in pain, then Frank will be
given a drug to relieve the pain.
Continuous passive motion machine
will be used to relax the knee muscles,
ensure blood circulation, and prevent
blood cloth (Gatewood, Tran &
Dragoo, 2017). This is done gently to
avoid extra pain to the patients. The
patients will also consult with the
physical therapist to be advised against
how the patients are going to adopt the
new knee and begin to walk again
gradually. The physical therapist will
advise appropriate on the simple
movement and work out for the knee
from day one after the surgery to the
very day that the knee will heal (Roca
et al., 2010).

there is a problem immediately action can be
taken. Wound infection can affect a quick
recovery. Therefore, it is widely recommended
that patients who have undergone knee
replacement should be collaborative with the
nurses to ensure speedy recovery (Mohammad et
al., 2018). Wound oozing and hematoma can
increase the risks of infection following knee
replacement.
Physiotherapy is also another collaborative
intervention (Aasvang et al., 2016). It involves
rehabilitation as an essential part to fast track
pathway for knee replacement patients. Patients
are mobilized on bed transfer once or twice.
They are also enhanced in terms of movement
from sitting to standing than to ambulation for
five to ten minutes. This is with the assistance of
the physical therapist or the nurses while others
use walking aid. This mobilization on the first
zero and one day old significantly reduces LOS
(Length of stay) and produces better pain score.
Excellent communication is also an intervention
for the patients (Cram et al., 2012). Effective

psychosocial care is required that there be a
strong relationship between patients and nurses.
Building this relationship requires building trust.
Providing resources and education to particular
patients concerning issues affecting them will
ensure psychosocial care. The psychosocial care
will not only geared toward the patients alone
but also the family (Ritter et al., 1994).
Potential patient clinical issues: Some
of the potential clinical matters as far
as knee surgery is concerned is the
chest pain, shortness in breath, and
much swells and redness or tenderness
in the lower leg. When such occurs, the
patients are advised to seek immediate
medical attention. The success of knee
surgery much depends on the patient's
willingness to follow instruction from
the surgeon (Scott et al., 2010). Pain is
normal for several weeks, and during
those weeks, Frank is not allowed to
soak in the bathroom. The wound
