NURSING ASSIGNMENT1
Introduction
“Correlates and predictors of missing nursing care in hospitals: Journal of clinical
nursing’ aims at deficient areas of nursing in the hospitals of Iceland. The journal was written
by Bragadottir et al., 2016. The ‘deficient’ areas in clinical environment is an ‘indicator’ of
the relation between patient safety and clinical practice. The study focusses on the
‘contributors’ of missing nursing care. The factors that lead to the deficiency includes – a
lack of teamwork and inappropriate staffing. Certain instructions can develop better strategies
which can can help decrease the impact of ‘missing’ areas on patient health and that can be
done by teamwork and correct staffing. The nurses should moreover investigate the clinical
problem with proper reasoning cycle to plan and execute procedures that can minimize the
contributors (Saquer and AbAlRub, 2018). The purpose of this essay is to discuss the missed
nursing care and its contributors in relation to patient safety.
The research problem and its significance
Lack of researches has led to most of the missing care in nursing fraternity. By
definition, missed nursing care is the incomplete clinical nursing delivered to the patients.
Incomplete nursing care refers to the delay or deficiency in administrative, biomedical or
emotional part of the nursing care. Missed segments of the care eventually lessens the quality
of clinical practice – developing chances of patient accidents and increasing incidents if
worsened patient prognosis, re admission (Kim, Yoo & Se0. 2018). In this research study,
workforce factors coupled with staff characteristics are identified as the major contributors of
a deficient clinical practice. Workforce factors comprises of inefficient staffing, unsupportive
work environment, patient load and gap in communication (Bragadottir et al., 2016, Ball et
al., 2013). Collaboration and team work is a very important variable in missed nursing care.

team has a positive outcome for the treatment process – that includes both the medical team
and the patient. Team and team work is an identified mitigating factor that addresses the
“missed nursing care” in the right way (Chapman et al., 2016)
The study aims to educate the nursing staff about how the ‘missed nursing care’
problem has been dealt with attention worldwide. The study also enlightens the nurse on how
evidence based practice is essential for a good outcome. The study also sends a deep message
to higher organizations and healthcare providers about the ‘attention’ which is required to be
given to the ‘missed’ or deficient areas of nursing care (Cleary- Holdforth, 2019). Hence, the
main purpose of this research was to understand the various contributing factors that
influences the deficient nursing care prevalent in hospital settings. The study gives a clear
instruction to healthcare administrators on how to deliver a patient centered nursing care in
improving the disease outcome and patient satisfaction.
The research design and the method
Cross sectional structure of qualitative survey was used in the research study. The
participants were registered and practical nurses employed full time in primary healthcare
providers of Iceland. The study setting or environment comprised of 27 surgical, medical and
intensive units (of 8 Iceland hospitals). The sample had 864 nursing staff. The response got
was 69.3 %. A data collection method of questionnaire that contained questions regarding
missed nursing care and team framework. The survey was run through acceptability, validity
and reliability ( Bragadottir & Kalisch, 2018)
Missacre survey- Icelandic comprises of two parts that is A, B. The first part A
focused on deficient(missed) areas of nursing care while part B analyzes the reasons of a
delayed nursing care. Part A was comprised of 24 items where the participants were
instructed to indicate the ‘missing’ segments of nursing care on a five point Likert scale. ‘5’
