Student Number:Selection of Disease and Target Age
Group
The osteoporosis is one of the bone diseases
which are characterized by aggravation of the
quality and density of the bones. The risk of
fracture of bones is highly increased as bones
tend to become fragile and porous due to
osteoporosis (Kanis et al., 2013). The bone
loss occurs in silent but progressive way
without any symptoms.
In this segment the target age group that has
been selected are the Australian women who
are above the age of fifty years.
Health Promotion approaches for the
treatment of Osteoporosis
The health promotion approaches are the
initiatives that are taken with the objective of
prevention and the treatment of the
osteoporosis.
Population based approaches for promoting
bone health
The aim of the population based approaches
is to target the population with the aim of
promoting the overall health of the
community and also prevent the several
diseases, disability or premature death. It has
been identified that one of the most effective
population-based approaches related to the
prevention of the bone disease such as
osteoporosis is the combination of the
individual and the population level initiatives
(Curtis, Moon, Harvey & Cooper, 2017).

The preventive health education program would play a
significant role in the prevention of the osteoporosis affecting
the women above the age of fifty in Australia. This health
education program would focus on the preventive health
education activity and create awareness among the women
above the age of fifty who are have increased tendency to
suffer from the disease (Whitehead, Keast, Montgomery &
Hayman, 2004). This health education program would utilize
a participatory framework that would educate the women
population of Australia who are at a higher risk of getting
affected by this disease.
This health education program would be beneficial considering
the fact that the prevention activity of this disease is given
low priority in the existing healthcare services. Although this
disease is preventable, it is managed only after it is quite
evident among the patients. The existing service aims to
manage Osteoporosis only when the patient has acquired the
disease or is at high risk and as a result of it, this has huge
economic and social burden on the society. The preventive
health education program would provide preventive
intervention of the disease.

Nursing Assignment 4Life Style Medicines Recommendations for the treatment of
Osteoporosis
There are several ways by which the women can prevent osteoporosis
and some of preventive measures to avoid osteoporosis are as follows:
Following a healthy and varied diet that would contain ample amount of
fresh vegetables, fruits as well as whole grains.
Consumption of the calcium-rich foods
Avoid smoking
Limited alcohol consumption and consumption of caffeine
Engaging in various strength training and weight bearing exercises.
Exercises for prevention of Osteoporosis
The exercises are considered to be one of the most effective ways for
the prevention of osteoporosis. There are some of the exercises that
increases bone density and they are as follows:
Some of the weight bearing activities that promotes bone growth
includes brisk walking, swimming, cycling and others. The patients
should avoid sitting idle for considerable amount of time.
The strength training or the resistance training is also one of the
important exercises for maintaining the bone health. It has been
identified that the strength training plays a significant role in improving
the mineral bone density of the bones (Cesarec, 2014).
Medications for the treatment of Osteoporosis
Some of the medicines that are effective for the treatment
of the osteoporosis includes bisphosphonates, selective
oestrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), denosumab,
menopausal hormone therapy and others (Panday, Gona &
Humphrey, 2014).

The Health Belief Model is one of the
behaviour change model that would
help the women in Australia to
understand and adopt the adopt
prevention strategies against the
osteoporosis disease. There are six
constructs related to the health
belief model and they are as follows:
Perceived Susceptibility- Thi
constructs refers to the perception of
the patient about the risk of
acquiring the osteoporosis disease.
Perceived Severity – This constructs
of the model highlights the feelings
of the patients on the seriousness
and the consequences of the
osteoporosis disease.
Perceived Benefits – In this
constructs the perception of the
patient is discussed related to the
effectiveness of the actions available
to reduce the threat of osteoporosis
(Jeihooni et al., 2015).
Perceived Barriers- This construct
refers to the feelings of the patient
of osteoporosis about the barriers or
obstacles related to performing
recommended health action against
the disease.
Cue to action – This constructs
provided the stimulus for the patient
suffering from osteoporosis to accept
the recommended health action plan
against the disease.
Self-efficacy- This construct focuses
on the level of confidence that is
possessed by the patient of
osteoporosis regarding successfully
performing a behaviour related to
prevention of osteoporosis.
