Introduction:
Asthma is considered as a serious respiratory disease which became the socio
economic issues, affecting more than 300 million individuals across the globe. The disease is
considered as an inflammatory disease in the airway, leading to the airway obstructions,
hyper responsiveness and airway wall alteration. As discussed by researchers significant
number of patients with asthma develop asthma because poor lifestyle and unhealthy habits.
The documented literature suggested that majority of the patients with asthma develop the
disease because unhealthy habit of smoking. While smoking is one of the major risk factor of
development of asthma, other risk factors also contribute to high prevalence of asthma such
as lack of physical activity, poor diet, obesity and stress. Hence, in order to reduce the high
prevalence of asthma, it is required to amend the lifestyle. The competency skills of nurses
such as essential skills clusters play crucial in amending the lifestyle of the patients for
supporting the wellbeing of the patient. This essay will explore execration of asthma in
relation to the patients’ lifestyle.

administered with Salbutamol only when required. His treatment related information, the
nursing staffs and the other stakeholders involved in his care and treatment process were kept
confidential under the code of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The code for
confidentiality of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) guides the nursing staffs and
other health care professionals to keep the patient’s health and treatment details confidential
and must not share or disclose it to everyone (Duffy & Gillies, 2018). The details should be
disclosed only if it is necessary and is required for the treatment and well-being of the patient.
Disclosing one’s health and treatment details to everyone is a counted as an offensive
behaviour (Shepherd, 2017).
Essential Skills Clusters (ESCs):
The Essential Skills Clusters (ESCs) is divided into 5 divisions and are described as
follows:
Care, compassion and communication is one of the major essential skills that needs to
be practiced by every nursing staff in order to deliver a better care and treatment to the
patient. The nursing staffs needs to demonstrate these skills as the first step of care delivery
according to the standards for all the process with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
(Sinclair et al., 2016).
The organizational aspects of health care states that the registered nursing staffs needs
to systematically evaluate, prepare plans and also provide a better holistic care to the patients
according to the needs of the individuals. It guides the nursing staffs to provide support and
protection to the children and adults who are in vulnerable conditions (Heintz et al., 2015).
Also co-ordination, leading and providing properly managed care to the patients in need. It
provides the nursing staff with a better guidance and knowledge regarding the effectiveness

of the care and treatment provided while working as a multidisciplinary team (Gordon et al.,
2018).
The infection prevention and control is one of the essential skills which guides the
nursing staff about the need of the nursing staff to have appropriate idea, knowledge and
understanding regarding the treatment they are providing to their patients and also skills they
need to provide to the patients according to their health condition and needs (Berríos-Torres
et al., 2017). the infection prevention and control provides a better understanding regarding
the safety and precautions that needs to be implicated in order to avoid infection or any
severity in the health condition of the patients (World Health Organization, 2016).
The nutrition and fluid management is also one of the major aspects of essential skills
cluster, as it guides the nursing staffs regarding the management of the diet and nutrition
uptake of the patients. It is the nurse’s role to guide the patients and manage the diet and
nutrition uptake of the patients according to their health condition and needs in order to retain
a better health outcome (Klek et al., 2016).
The last type of essential skills culture states medicine management. It provides the
knowledge and understanding to the nursing staffs regarding the management of treatment
and medication that needs to be provided to the patients in order to help them recover from
their health conditions (Habib et al., 2015). The nursing staff is the primary factor of an
effective health care system, as the nursing staff provides a management plan and mi tors the
health outcomes of the patient, thus it is important for the nursing staff to have a better
understanding regarding the management of medicines (Stavropoulos et al., 2016).
