PERSONAL STATEMENT2 PERSONAL STATEMENT FOR A NURSING COURSE According to me, nursing is not just a career path; it is all about passion, doing what one’s heart and mind are deeply rooted in. I once watched someone being neglected by the nurses while I had visited my then sick brother in the hospital and that is when the drive into the nursing career came about. Being there for people when they need me the most and caring about them has driven me into this field. This is the reason why I took my time to discuss it with my family and all of them were of the opinion that I should venture into this field. These two reasons have been my motivational factors in deciding to take a nursing course at the university. Nursing is a profession under the health care system in general which is concerned with the care for individuals, families and the community at large so that they may recover from illness and attain optimal health. My main career aspiration for taking this course is that I would just like to serve the sick people so that they can feel there is someone who is concerned about their wellbeing and would do anything to ensure their lives are free from illness as per the words of Val Saintsbury,”Nurses dispense comfort, compassion, and caring without even a prescription.” Currently, my areas of study include Biology, Psychology, and Sociology, Roles of a nurse and Health Inequalities. The units I liked the most while studying these programs include Biochemistry, Genetics, Neuroscience, Social change, and social issues among others. I happened to like the units because they are related closely to this field I have chosen. They are core to anyone who has set his future in Nursing (Crisp, Rebeiro, & Waters, 2016). The knowledge gained from this disciplines will be of great importance since it seems to go hand in hand with what I will learn in Nursing. Previously, I have worked as a customer service agent, a team leader and a supervisor in a retail shop. As a supervisor, my duties were managing the staff members by ensuring everything is performed as required and always coming up with pricing policies of the products sold. As a team leader, my duties were developing strategies the team will adopt in achieving its objectives, communicating the strategies to the team and listen to their feedback (Gyanchandani, 2017). I came to learn that one needs to be confident in whatever they do and also be ethic so as to gain the respect of colleagues. The skills gained from my previous job experiences include
PERSONAL STATEMENT3 always coming up with the right judgment in conflicting situations and being able to control one’s emotions, be creative and proactive to issues that arise suddenly. Normally, I’m engaged in a number of extra-curricular activities during my free time in the field of sports and physical activities, cultural activities and community activities. In the field of sports and physical activities, I participate in outdoor activities including skiing and rock climbing, and physical fitness activities including swimming and aerobics (Lau, Acosta, & Hsu, 2014). When it comes to cultural activities, I take part in singing and creation and exhibition of art-work. In community activities, I visit orphanages and the sick in hospitals and participating in programs aimed at keeping the environment clean (Lehman, and Dumais, 2017). There are a number of enrichment activities at college but my participation in volunteering work and first aid will be of great help in my career as a nurse. As a nurse, you must always be in a position to handle cases which require first and also volunteer to help whenever such cases arise. Personally, I have such technical skills as being compassionate since nursing requires one to care and feel for the patients, able to think critically since a nurse is likely to encounter situation that requires appropriate decision-making, and I have a commitment to development since the nursing sector is subject to dynamism and I should be better placed to embrace the change so as to be up-to-date with what needs to be done. I also have good communication skills, I’m always confident no matter the kind of situation I find myself into, able to conduct myself ethically both at personal and professional levels and always embracing teamwork. My personal qualities include being flexible, being able to pay attention to details, good interpersonal skills and emotionally stable, and also possess skills in solving problems (Susanti, 2017). In conclusion, I’m hoping life at the university is going to be in such a way that I experience minimum hurdles in my quest to acquire skills in nursing. Like Rashedur Ryan Rahman’s words, “Your VISION and your self-willingness are the MOST powerful elements to conquer your goal”,I feel am better placed to undertake this program because I have all it takes to achieve this. The enthusiasm and commitment I always have towards my undertakings will be of great help.
