Part 2 Portfolio (1000 words)
As per Cope and Murray (2018), nursing portfolio is the professional document in which
nursing professionals document their professional skills, nursing achievements, their
experiences and their abilities to work under pressure so that these documents could be
included in a single document for records. Since 2011, I have been thinking of furthering my
education, so that I can give the highest service to the people of the Community that I serve.
I have experience in Medical/Surgical Nursing, Palliative Care and Acute Aged Care
(Nursing Homes), Community Home Based care and Mental Health Nursing. I worked in
Mission Hospitals Zimbabwe as a Registered Nurse and as part of the counselling team for
people with HIV/AIDS and Palliative Care Programs. I have done Missionary work as a Nun
in Zimbabwe for 17 years.
I have been very industrious and hard working. Despite my rigorous schedule, I have
managed to be involved in a counselling program, obtaining the following credentials:
- Certificate in Systemic Counselling from 1993 – 1994 in Harare Zimbabwe.
- NCLEX RN License 2001 - 2002 USA
- Graduate Certificate in Counselling 2004 - 2005 Institute of Counselling in
Sydney
- Graduate Diploma in Counselling 2006 - 2008 Institute of Counselling in
Sydney (Not completed)
- Graduate Diploma in Community Counselling 2010 – 2011 University of Canberra
ACT.
Areas of study included Family Therapy, Drug and Alcohol, Palliative Care, Community
Home Based Care and Mental Health. This reflects my ability to effectively manage my time
and a passion to give more to the people I serve.
I have been successful in management of the responsibilities of planning, implementing and
evaluation of my assigned duties. My leadership in the teamwork management has been a
major factor in changing the organization of the facilities in which I worked, to be more
effective, in delivering the services to the communities, families and individuals, as I
participated in creative problem solving, critical and lateral thinking.
My profession has allowed me to develop opportunities so that I could achieve my goals and
achieve higher education so that I could improve my skills and achieve overall purpose and

mission of the profession (Crighton et al., 2018). I believe in challenging myself. I
continuously challenge myself to take on difficult tasks that will help improve myself as a
person and professional challenges. Personal challenges help me to be a better person and
improve my social interactions with fellow healthcare workers, friends and families.
Professional challenges remind me on what I learned at school and motivate me to become a
better nurse. Professional challenges help to boost my professional appearance which
improves my credibility as a nurse (Panesar, Allen, & Estafan, 2016).
I recognized that I am not perfect, but the flaws make me who I am. Past philosophers said
that if everyone in the world was the same, then the world would be a very boring place. It is
through the various unique personal beliefs, values, strengths and weaknesses that the world
can become a better place.
I believe that I was meant to be a nurse. The compassion, empathy and selfless nature that
was instilled in me while growing up was in the right direction. Probably, if I had grown in a
different neighborhood with different parents and friends, I might have been a teacher or fire
fighter or any other profession that involves being selfless. What is clear is that I would have
still made a difference in the world. I would make a young boy smile or restored the faith of a
mother with their child. I would have found a way to make the world a happier place
(Middleton, 2019).
My personal beliefs have been the building blocks to form my career. They have helped me
grow in my career and have also helped me become a leader. Being a leader helps me to
inspire other people to work hard in their fields. It also inspires me as an individual to be a
better person who is a role model to others. My personal beliefs have been like a cornerstone
throughout my journey as a nurse. Going forward, I hope to instill the same values and beliefs
that I have to others. Hopefully they will go out and make a difference in the world and
inspire someone else, and slowly the world will become a better place one person at a time
(Cordieret al., 2016).
In addition to my accomplishments, my life experience and the passion of giving, I have
started a Charitable Organization called the Round Hut Village. www.roundhutvillage.org
which is based on the traditions of the African Culture. The Round Hut Village’s theory
focuses on community based interventions, empowering women, children and their families.
Creating safe, supportive, sustainable and inclusiveness, and increasing awareness and
recognition of mental health and well being issues. The Round Hut Village is a Community

based programme for women and children of all cultures, that includes sharing, listening to
one another, singing and dancing, in a non-judgemental environment. As the founder of the
Round Hut Village, I wish to deliver therapeutic evidence based solutions to the problems
that women and children or families present to the Round Hut. I find that the following
approaches are essential in any given situation:-
- Evidence based individual therapy
- Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
- Schema Therapy
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
- Motivational Interviewing
- Empathetic Counselling
- Mindfulness.
With the above approaches – I have realised that I can only give what I have, and this have
driven my passion, to study the Masters of Counselling in order to be equipped with the
knowledge to empower the Community which I serve, by delivering the possible highest
therapeutic approaches.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Ethel Paraiwa-Murray
