NURSING REFLECTIVE ESSAY Introduction The concept of leadership and management in the nursing and health care setup is a crucial factor. It helps in the management of the workforce, patient management, clinical approach, improvement in the treatment process, addressing all needs of patients and other factors (Van Rossum, Aij, Simons, van der Eng & ten Have, 2016). The leadership management is the factor that needed to be assessed by the senior nurse and the process of the management of a certain ward is his or her responsibility. Leadership is primarily associated with the workforce management and also coordinating the staffs according to the work load. The leadership also associated to the decision making process for the clinical aspect of a patient. The factor of the leadership and management can be gained by the experience gathering in the workplace (D’Andreamatteo, Ianni, Lega & Sargiacomo, 2015). The following section will be comprised of the reflection on a certain aspect of the leadership and management process for the clinical care to the patients in a ward of an organisation. Description I am a senior registered nurse in the acute care unit of the Alexandra Hospital, Singapore (Ah.com.sg, 2019). One day there was a rush in the ward as a number of patients admitted to the ward with different type of emergencies including myocardial infarction, cerebral stroke, several elderly patients with acute mental and physical conditions and two accident cases. However, that day in the acute care unit we did not have the adequate number of staffs along with the head nurse as well to address all these cases and we need to collaborate according to the situation and as the senior nurse I need to take charge and lead others. The situation was critical and lacking
NURSING REFLECTIVE ESSAY the actual workforce I was unable to address all the patients at a time. Here, I needed my management skills along with the leadership commands. In order to provide the proper care to all the patients I took the responsibilities of the accident cases and divided the work load between two subordinates of the care for the elderly patient. However, I only had one more subordinate nurse under me to address all the cardiac patients. Hence, I contacted the hospital management to provide me at least two nurses in order to treat those patients as well. The management group ensured me about providing extra nurses but it would take time thus I also tried to provide care to the cardiac patients for the time being. Feelings On the basis of this condition I can be able to reflect on the leadership skills and the management skills of me in the critical conditions. I found that in order to address proper care and treatment to all the patients we need more staffs and the collaboration among those staffs as well (Hobbs et al., 2016). A leader should be able to lead and interact with other staffs in order to properly divide the work load and also provide required care to the patients (Hanse, Harlin, Jarebrant, Ulin & Winkel, 2016). At the mentioned critical situation I needed to ensure the care of the patients proceed in a continuous way however, lack of staff made the situation more critical and we were failed to collaborate with the doctors at several times and also failed to assess all the factors of the patients in several accounts (Reeves, Pelone, Harrison, Goldman & Zwarenstein, 2017). Hence, on the basis of this condition I feel I need more experience for the leadership and management in the field of health care. It has also been seen some conflicts among the staffs and fumbles as well. I need to take account of those incidents as well in order to develop my leadership skills and try to prevent those factors.
NURSING REFLECTIVE ESSAY Evaluation Evaluating the situation I found out that the leadership management is a crucial factor and without proper experience it is a very difficult thing to address as well. As I was a senior nurse I took charge in place of the ward head and my experience of treating patients in difficult situations helped me in this situation. However, the conditions where I and my subordinates fail were the factors I need to assess more and need to find solutions that would be help develop more experience about the leadership management. On the other hand as leader a person needed to be able to interact with other staffs as well as the management group for the better treatment of the patients and I have tried my best to provide the proper care to the patients and also collaborate with the nurses, doctors and also the management group. The situation and the failures helped me in the learning about the leadership management in the critical situation as well as the factors by implementing which I can be able to interact with the staffs more effectively and address the mal situations. I was also able to experience and learn the leadership principles that needed to be considered in the process of the management (Beam & Kohane, 2018). Analysis Based on the above mentioned situation and the evaluation we can be able to analyse the factors of the leadership management skills needed in the critical situations of health care in an organisation. The factor of the leadership is a factor that would be gained by experience and the health care knowledge as well (Davies, Powell & Nutley, 2015). The leadership principles would be needed to be considered by the person leading the health care process. The five basic

NURSING REFLECTIVE ESSAY principles of the leaderships which would be considered in these kind of critical cases are the focus on the situation, issue, or behaviour, not on the person, maintain the self-confidence and self-esteem of others along with him or herself, maintain constructive relationships with your employees, peers, and managers, take initiative to make things better and lead by example (Amanchukwu, Stanley & Ololube, 2015). On the basis of this principle it can be stated that the needed of the person centred care and the evidence based practice would be needed for the batter care providence. On the other hand the management skills such as the communication skills, planning, decision making, problem solving, motivation and other needed to be used as well for the proper health care providence to the patients and also managing the workforce, work load and the conflicts among the staffs and patients as well (Heijmans, M., Waverijn, G., Rademakers van der Vaart & Rijken, 2015). Conclusion Based on the above discussion it can be stated that the need of the leadership and the management skills are the primary factors for a health care personnel in order to address different critical situations. The leadership principles and the management skills needed to be considered in case of the critical situation management as well. The factor of the experience and the knowledge about the leadership and the management skills are the factors that needed to be assessed by the health care personnel. The factors of the proper care providence are a factor that helps in the better assessment of the situations of health care. The above mentioned situation is a basic situation where the time management and also the interaction skills and the constructive relationship build up approaches are the factors that needed to be considered with a primary focus. The factors of the leadership and the management in managing critical situations and the
NURSING REFLECTIVE ESSAY conflicting situations are the factors needed to be taught to the nurses for better assessment of the situations and take action according to the knowledge. Action Plan On the basis of the evaluation and the analysis process we can be able to devise some action plans which can be able to help in the better development of the leadership and management skills of a nurse. The nurse should take some online management and leadership training for the betterment of the knowledge about the aspect of the leadership. Other than this the nurse should also be able to read different published reports from the electronic databases. The nurse should also read and analyse the factors of leadership and management from the printed sources. Moreover, the nurse should follow the senior management personnel of the organisation and the senior nurses of the organisation as well. Taking advise from the seniors would also be a factor that would help the nurse in the process of the learning the process of leadership in the critical situations and the conflicts (Sonnino, 2016). All the learning from different sources should also be reflected by the nurse for the better assessment of the knowledge development of him or her. All these factors can be done with a time frame of at least six months (HafsteinsdĂłttir, van der Zwaag & Schuurmans, 2017). Summary The above sector is a description of a situation in a health care organization and the nurse addressing the situation by means of his or her leadership skills and the management skills. However, the analysis and the evaluation highlighted the nurse needs more knowledge and experience in the field of the leadership and management. The action plan for development of the
NURSING REFLECTIVE ESSAY skill development in a more effective way was also discussed. On the basis of this discussion it can be said that the leadership and the management skills are the crucial factors that needed to be incorporated in the nursing career.
