1NURSING REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS1.In the case scenario of Mrs. Trent, a 80 year old day with low hemoglobin levels, she wasscheduled to receive a colonoscopy. However, the dilemma was that despite being explained toher all about the procedure, she refused to give consent for the procedure. In addition, she had todrink several liters of bowel preparation solution, she refused to drink it and the nurse wasadvised to keep her drinking the solution. Patient centered care is not evident in this scenariobecause the nurses were not responsive to patient preferences, values and needs and took clinicaldecision without considering patient values. This is also evident because in spite of Mrs. Trentbeing distressed, she was coaxed to drink the solution by the senior nurse. The care for Mrs. Trent would have been more reflective of patient-centered care if thenurses had taken to care to communicate with Mrs. Trent and understand the reason for notdrinking the solution. Secondly, before asking Mrs. Trent to drink the solution, the nurse couldhave calmly asked her why she was distressed and understand the factor that was worrying her.By this way, the nurse could have taken proper response to patient’s distress and politelyexplained to her the benefit of drinking in order to successfully complete the colonoscopy.Instead of contacting her son to sign the consent for Mrs. Trent, another patient centered careoption that could have been taken would be to explain the benefits of colonoscopy for earlydiagnosis of problem and fast recovery and discharge from hospital. The prospective of notstaying in hospital for longer time might have motivated Mrs. Trent to give consent for theprocedure. In my placement course in the second year, if I had got the chance to care for Mrs. Trent,I would have used the strategy of compassionate communication skills to build rapport with Mrs.
