NURSING TEACHING PORTFOLIO
Introduction
I have been working as a senior nurse in the department of Cornea replacement surgery in
a reputed Health Care institution for the last 10 years. The aim of this current report is to prepare
teaching portfolio, for the nurse who will be working in the same department clinic of cornea
transplant. With the help of the experience that I have gained over the years, have helped me in
the development process and gaining the skills that are needed to deal with the complication of
the cornea transplant clinic.
The portfolio will be prepared with the help of the experience that I have gained over the
years in the respective department. The effectiveness of the teaching plan will be mentioned
along with the effectiveness of the teaching theory that is implemented in the respective nursing
portfolio. Proper data collected will be collected with the help of the survey, which will help me
in the process of deciding upon the strategies that will be used in the process of dealing with that
of the process of teaching strategy that is needed for the nurses of the department of cornea
transplant.
Character of an effective teacher
The quality of the teaching portfolio of a nurse profile depends upon the effectiveness of
the teaching policies implemented in respective course. The effectiveness of the teaching method
that I have used in the teaching portfolio as help to deal with the challenge that are related with
most of the parts related with the skills that are needed with that of the treatment that are
provided to the medical practioners of the cornea transplant department. One of the effective
characters of a teacher working in the nursing department is to ensure that all the students get

proper exposure to the nursing plan. From the survey that I have conducted, it is evident that
high level of dedication and the ability to translate critical knowledge are few of the essential
skills that are needed to deal with that of the teaching plan. The high level of delicacy that is
involved in the case of dealing with the patients of the cornea replacement can be overcome with
the help of the effective teaching skills. As a dedicated teacher, it is one of my duties to ensure
that proper compassionate are being shown to every students, which can help in the matters of
providing full mental support. It is also essential in this context to display the skills that are
needed to deal with practical patient of cornea replacement surgery. It can be also possible with
high level of knowledge to deal with the challenge of helping out the inexperienced nurses to
deal with the psychological and mental challenge. It is also possible to deal with the challenge of
most of the important matters related with that of the lack of knowledge among the students.
In order to establish myself as reputed teacher within the nursing department it is
essential for me to understand the perspective of the nursing students. This can be achieved with
the help of high level of dedication and commitment towards the nursing students. It is also one
of the characteristics of an effective teacher to understand the challenge encountered by the
student while acquiring the high level of skills that is needed for the cornea replacement
department. With high level of challenge that is encountered by the students, it can easily be a
source of discouragement.
At the initial stage, it is essential to fix up on the nursing plan, which is needed to deal
with the challenges encountered by the medical practitioners in the cornea replacement
department. Proper level of awareness one of the important responsibility of a teacher which can
help to ensure all the necessary skills are being transferred to the students.

Planning of the learning activity
The planning of the nursing portfolio teaching session is done according to the
requirements how the cornea replacement department. It is one of the essential parts of the
training program, to understand the requirement of the training program.
There are special teaching program for clinical education, which is aimed to improve
upon the training program that is needed to improving up on the challenge encountered by
inexperienced nurses. As an effective teacher, it is my duty to ensure that proper learning
resources are being used in accessing the materials that are needed for the teaching program.
The plan of the training program should be based upon the requirement of the audience
group. This can help to deal with the structural framework of the overall teaching plan. It is
essential for learners to use all their experience and. training skills. It is also essential to mention
that the needs of the learning skills as usually from different groups. I also have the skill to apply
critical thinking during the time of crisis that encountered by the nursing students the cornea
replacement department.
In the secondary steps, it is it essential to assess the requirement of the nursing teaching
plan. It will involve the process of identifying the target areas and also that of the process that is
needed to assist the inexperienced workers. Design of the clinical learning activity is also one of
the essential steps which can help to decide upon the program that is needed for supervision and
monitoring of the progress (Willmarth-Stec & Beery, 2015).
The planning process needs to ensure that all the resources available to the learners and
properly utilized which can be an essential component of the portfolio. The final stage of the
Planning involves evaluation of the outcomes of the nursing plan. This can be achieved with the

help of most of the essential activities related with the nursing program. It is also essential for me
as a nurse to ensure that all the students in the nursing degree program take equal participation in
understanding and display equal level of enthusiasm. I also need to take special initiatives that
can help to improve upon the techquies related to practical teachings procedures that is needed
among the nursing students. This is also among the special initiatives that are done to encourage
the nursing workers to improve upon the skills that can be used in the future of all types of crisis
situations.
Strategies in the evaluation of my Clinical setting
I have also used special strategy in order to evaluate the clinical setting that is a part of
the cornea replacement department. Evaluation is done based upon the performance rating that I
have obtained for my career of Nursing. The rating is essential in the context due to the fact that
it can help me to understand my exact area of weakness.
There is special rating scale that I have initiated which can help to properly evaluate and
rate up on my teaching ability. Predefined descriptors are used as the measurement of the rating
scales which is used as a parameter to improve upon my teacher teaching skills. The overall
capability of the portfolio can also be evaluated with the help of the rating scale (Capan et al.,
2013).
It is also one of the essential parts of the teaching program to properly understand the
strength and weakness of individual students. It is relevant to mention in the context that due to
the high level of technology that are being introduced in the medical science it is now possible to
easily deal with the challenge of delicate medical treatments like cornea replacement surgery.
Nevertheless, it is essential for me as a nurse to understand the importance and operational

purpose of the Medical Technology that can be a significant part of the teaching portfolio. It is
also one of my duties to ensure that level of awareness of all the nursing staff within the hospital
is increased that can help them to easily operate all the latest equipments of cornea replacement
surgery. The skill development program can be enhanced with the help of the special training
programs that are implemented that can be done with the help of the skill development program.
It is important for me as a nurse to regularly improve upon my skills depending upon every types
of situation that I go through and thereby able to improve upon my experience and nursing
teaching skills. This can also help to deal with the challenges of dealing that is related with that
of the important skills of the inexperienced nursing students.
It is essential to mention in the contexts that there is separate evaluation techniques that
can be implemented to deal with the challenge of critical task associated with nursing practice.
I need to evaluate my overall effectiveness of the nursing portfolio by determining the
characteristics of the new range of category that I have introduced as a part of the nursing
portfolio. One of the major advantages of this strategy making process is to understand the
importance of the critical behavior that is displayed by the nurses in Crisis situations. It is also
possible to estimate all performance level of mine as an effective nursing teacher. I also need to
take proper advice from the supervisors before implementing the portfolio in practice that can be
achieved with the help of the overall rating scale.
Teaching effectiveness (Kinesthetic learning style)
This type of learning style is one of the three learning styles that have been popularized
by Neil. D. In this type of learning, the education is taken up by the students carrying out
physical activities rather than watching demonstration or listening to a lecture. The type of

education takes place by hand on experience. Jenny is a new nurse in the corneal transplant
clinic. There are nursing interventions to prevent the detrimental effects post-corneal transplant
surgery. Nurses contributions are there that can reduce the graft rejection rates due to the corneal
transplants. Nursing assistance is required to ensure a proper corneal transplant. The nurses have
to perform the enucleation of the eyeball. For this they have to be technically qualified. Jenny
has attended the demonstration and the lecture given by me regarding the cornea transplants and
the graft rejection. Most of the knowledge has been gained by the performing skills. They have
got sufficient amount of train and have performed the procedure in hand. In the last session
Jenny had actively participated in the e-nucleation procedure.
Quiz on the characteristics of a good clinical teacher and a good clinical student
I have been able to complete the quiz on my perspective on the quality of a good student.
In order to carry out effective teaching, it is necessary that a professional interpersonal
relationship is establishes between the student and the teacher in order to ensure an efficient
teaching procedure (Boctor, 2013).
An efficient clinical teacher should be able clinically competent, should possess a vivid
knowledge about the cornea transplant. I simply agree to the fact that a clinical teacher should be
able to build in the rapport with the student and will be able to impart proper knowledge to the
student (Boctor, 2013). As per the teacher’s perspective, a clinical teacher should be responsible,
dedicated, motivated, receptive, and flexible. From the student’s point of view, a teacher should
be hardworking, responsible, participative, enthusiastic and interactive.

NURSING TEACHING PORTFOLIO
I have conducted session with patients who will be having a cornea transplant under the
supervision of a specialized nurse in the ophthalmologic department. I have tried to administer
the andragogical concept of teaching to the patient. According to Stomberg there is a 5 step
process to deliver patient education that has been used in my session with patient Mr. Joseph.
The learning session was as follows:
Assessment of the learner: Mr. Joseph requires specific education regarding the cornea
transplants and its pro and cons and he is an adult learner.
Identification of Mr Joseph’s learning barriers: Mr. Joseph is an adult. Therefore it was a bit
difficult for him to accept the new changes and discard the conventional education.
Planning: A nurse assisted Mr. Joseph to understand the learning goals and develop a teaching
plan that is patient centered. We have tried to impart education about what is graft rejection. We
have tried to educate him about the different medical and the pharmaceutical diagnosis and the
treatments.
Implementation: I have selected appropriate teaching materials to provide knowledge about graft
rejection to the patients. I have also described him about the consequences about graft
withdrawal.
Evaluation: finally I have recorded the feedback of Mr. Joseph.
It has to be noted that after the application of the in service session regarding the transplantation
of Cornea and graft acceptance and rejection. The patients have become more apprehensive in
accepting the modes of the treatment and have understood better about their treatment regimen
and the necessity of the treatments procedures.

There are many instructional materials that can be effective in imparting knowledge to the
patient. One such is PowerPoint presentations. It can incorporate pictures, videos and animations
to create a clear knowledge of the subject to the patient (Zokaee, Zaferanieh & Naseri, 2012). I
have organized a PowerPoint presentation on eye problems faced by the critical care patients
such as the paralysis of the muscles. I have prepared presentations regarding complications like
the lagopthalmos, chemosis. Such helped to provide knowledge to the patients regarding the
critical condition of the eye. The aim was to prevent corneal infection.
The teaching strategies in nursing education:
I have tried to use the 10 strategies to provide information to the patient. They are as follows-
Lecture- A lecture can provide education to a large number of people, and it can produce
complex topics to a large number of people. The disadvantage of a lecture is that student remains
in a passive role (Zokaee, Zaferanieh & Naseri, 2012).
Stimulation: This methodology is costly, but it can provide a realistic scenario that is similar to
actual condition of the patient and it provide scope for the direct application of the theoretical
knowledge to practice. It helps to provide a hand on experience the learners (Billings &
Halstead, 2015). This can be done by using original case studies or mannequins.
Online course: Online courses are suitable for learning. This kind of a study is cost effective and
is extremely flexible and useful in providing education to the patient. Online courses are
available even when the student cannot attend the classes. The scope of learning becomes
expanded in this case (Billings & Halstead, 2015).

Games: The games and the quizzes related to teaching are effective in providing knowledge to
the patient, especially the elderly patients, as the elder persons are not very supportive of any
kinds of changes, games and quizzes helps them to be a part of the changes.
Role play: Role play is extremely useful in practicing the communication skills in a clinical
environment. Role play is again an excellent option in providing education to the learner
(Billings & Halstead, 2015).
Jigsaw classroom: A jigsaw class room organized by me has been successful in build
cooperative learning in the students.
Case study:
Case study always helps one to bridge the gap between the theory and the practice. The
case study provides by me has been able to develop analytical skills in the student. I have tried to
provide hypothetical situations to patients so that they can self assess the situations.
Artefacts: the evidence of student learning
According to me, the factors that are responsible for providing a clinical learning
experience are Autonomy, role clarity, recognition, peer support, quality supervision and the
opportunities provided for the learning. It will help the learners to practice their skills on the
patients or the mannequins. I try to impart practical knowledge to the students regarding the
management of the cornea transplants.
Further, they become acquainted with the experiences of working with the doctors, which help
them to learn about teamwork and communication (Billings & Halstead, 2015).
Teaching plans

In order to facilitate a successful teaching, a well chalked out plan is necessary. The
clinical teaching environment should be teaching friendly. I am supposed to have the ability to
assess the patients. My planning is able to provide patient specific knowledge.
I have a concept that a bedside clinical teaching is necessary in providing knowledge to the
patient.
There are certain incivilities in the class rooms which have to be avoided, such as the use of the
cell phones in the classroom, use of technologies without any valid reasons, sarcastic student
remarks, and inattentiveness in class (Billings & Halstead, 2015). Other incivilities that can be
found are the academic dishonesty, bullying, rude and hostile behavior with the professors. Loss
of patience, incompetence is the other factors that should be avoided at the highest priority. In
my teaching, I have tried and will try that the following incivilities have been avoided.
I have tried to provide teaching with power points and the documentaries (Billings & Halstead,
2015).
For practicing nursing skills in clinical practice, it is extremely important, if knowledge can be
provided by using documentaries and videos (Billings & Halstead, 2015). Direct visualization of
the problems can help the nursing students in identifying the areas for the further improvement. I
have understood that sometimes, while talking to the patients and the families we are not aware
of the non verbal cues. The educators can self record their works and provide it to the students.
As an educator, I would definitely like to self record my teaching sessions in order to point out
my flaws. Feedback should always be taken from the students, as seeking feedbacks from my
peers would be a biased one.

Further contribution that can bring about a good teaching is setting up quizzes, showing you tube
tapes to my students, maintaining my journal entry (Billings & Halstead, 2015).
All these will definitely cater to the nursing teaching process and will help to increase my
knowledge as well as the student’s knowledge.
