NUTRITION THERAPY1
Question 1
Body composition analysis is a technique to identify the composition of the body, such as the
protein, fat, water and mineral content. It shows alteration in the fat percentage, muscle mass and
fat mass. (Mialich, Sicchieri and Junior 2014). Some methods are skinfold and bioelectrical
impedance analysis, and the gold standard methods are in vivo cadaver analysis and hydrostatic
body fat testing.
Skinfold method is required to measure fat percentage in a body, specifically subcutaneous fat. It
is done by lifting the fold of fat through the help of callipers and this process has experts that can
differentiate between muscle and fat, which will help in giving the accurate results. It also
provides data for comparison in community health, including detection of health issues in a
larger population. From an individual perspective, it can be used to compare previous changes in
the health profile especially related to body fat (Cosh et al. 2015). The skinfold callipers are used
to measure the fat in the triceps, bicep, iliac crest and subscapular area of the body, which has
major portions of fat that are measured through this procedure. This method is 98% accurate but
it also depends on the skills of the experts because sometimes the trainer is not able to find the
fat layer, which leads to inaccurate calculations.
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a method used for estimating body composition that
includes muscle mass and body fat. The procedure has a weak electric current that flows through
the whole body and the voltage is measured to calculate the resistance of the body, which is also
known as impedance (Aandstad et al. 2014). The water in our body is stored in our muscles,
which suggests that people with more muscle have more water in their body that leads to low
resistance. BIA is a popular method because it is portable and is easy to handle for everyone. To
be specific, BIA measures the electrical resistance or the direction of the flow of electric current

travels through the body tissues and this helps in estimating the water content of the body. This
helps in estimating the body weight, body fat, and fat free body mass (Malbrain et al. 2014).
When these methods are compared to the gold standard methods then it can be seen that skinfold
and BIA are in the same line with cadaver analysis and hydrostatic body fat testing because all of
them measure body fat and lean muscle.
According to Barry’s condition, BIA seems to be the most accurate method of finding the body
composition because it has technical method and skin fold analysis is more manual that does not
ensure efficiency if the expert is not able to use the skin fold calliper properly.
