1) Introduction
One of the lowest lying islands nations, the Maldives consists
of 1190 coral islands clustered into 26 atolls stretching 750km
across the Indian ocean. Maldives have the 5th most diverse reef
system in the world. 99% of the country is water only 1% Land.
[ CITATION Thr \l 1033 ] Atolls are rich in marine ecosystem. Human
activity such as marine littering is severely impacting our oceans.
Marine pollution, an overwhelming majority of which comes from
land-based sources, is reaching alarming level, with an average of
13000 pieces of plastic litter to be found on every sq. km of ocean.
[ CITATION Ahm11 \l 1033 ]. This is further worsened by the absence
of a proper waste management system across the country. 860
metric ton waste is disposed daily. Almost 40 million single used
plastic bags imported in 2016 onwards.[ CITATION pla16 \l 1033 ]
Unfortunately, majority of these will end up in the ocean
threatening the fragile marine ecosystem.
This research proposal is mainly for a research which need to
be done to protect our ocean from plastic. Awareness and
education is used to in this task.
2) Project Research Problem:
“Marine Pollution clusters our seas and suffocates our
marine life” Minister of Environment, Climate Change and
Technology, H.E Aishath Shauna says in an interview at PSM on
5th May 2021.
This emerging crisis demands urgent action to protect the
seas and the marine environment. Maldives has main two
industry, Tourism industry and fisheries industry that are deeply
dependent on the economic values of the sea. For Maldives
protecting seas from marine pollution is about protecting islands,
way of life, food security, sustaining economy. [ CITATION env21 \

l 1033 ] . It is really important to prevent and manage waste
specially collecting harmful single use plastic and micro plastic
debris.
In Year 2015 Saaf Raaje was launched to promote public
awareness and education to reduce amount of waste thrown
everywhere. Upgrading waste management centers.
Socially, people indicate the inconvenience of carrying along
with reusable bottles of water and rather prefer buying plastic
bottled water already packaged. Therefore, there is a great need
to create awareness among people and educating children in
schools to aware negative impacts of using excessive plastic eg:
starting with plastic water bottles (PET). Its very important to
educate children about cleaning ocean and protect our
environment of daily use harmful plastic.[ CITATION Was15 \l
