INTRODUCTION
An operating system (OS) is an interface between a user of computer and computer
hardware (Resch, 2017). All the basic tasks such as file management, memory management,
process management etc are performed by operating system.
In this report the Window server 2012 R2 will be installed on the Oracle virtual box and
the four advantages of domain based environment over work group environment will be
discussed in this report.
TASK 1
Installation of Windows Sever 2012 R2 on Oracle Virtual Box
The steps for installing windows server 2012 R2 on virtual box are as follows-:
1. From Tech Net evaluation center firstly download the windows' server 2012 R2 evaluation.

2. The oracle virtual manager need to be selected , for that
 The NEW need to be selected
 Name : Windows Server 2012 R2
 Type: Microsoft windows
 Version: Windows 2012 (64-bit)

3. In the next step the 5120 M memory size need to be given

4. The virtual hard disk now need to be created

5. The Virtual Box disk Image need to be chosen

6. The dynamically allocated need to be selected

7. The size 30 GB need to be given

8. One can also select the VDI image location of file

9. The “create” need to be clicked in order to create “Windows server 2012 R2” virtual
machine(Peter and Roscoe, 2016)

10. To the virtual CD/DVD diver now attch the ISO image
 Make sure that Windows Server 2012 R2 VM is chosen and click on settings.
 The storage need to be selected. Under IDE controller click on empty.
 Click on “+” sign in attributes section for adding optional disk.
 The “ choose a disk file” need to be selected
 The location where the windows DVD IDO file is saved need to be browsed and also
select it.
 Click on open

11. The windows 2012 R2 can now be installed
 In the virtual box select the windows sever 2012 R2 VM and click on start. Click on next
when the install screen appears(How to Install Windows Server 2012R2 on VirtualBox,
2017)

 Click on install now

 The 2012 evaluation detector need to be selected then click on next. The command
prompt is included in the server core installation but bot a graphical user interface.
 The license terms need to be reviewed and to accept the license terms select the check
box and click next.
 The custom need to be selected : The windows only advanced need to be installed.

 The driver 0 unallocated space that is been created of 30 GB need to be selected. Then
click Next

 Now the installation will start

 The password for the administrator account need to be entered when prompted .Click on
finish

TASK 2
Four advantages of domain based environment over work group environment
In order to organize computers in network the domains and work groups are two different
methods. A work group is a form of peer to peer network. However on the other side a domain is
a client/server network. In this there is a centralized management of resources. The security is
also managed centrally in domain based environment.
The four benefits of domain over work group are as follows-:
1. In the domain based environment the user can log in from any workstation by making use
of their account and domain resources can be accessed by them. However in work group
the user is required to have a separate id of log in and password for specific workstation.

2. In domain based environment the users of domain need to give a password every time
when they access the domain. However in work group environment the separate log in id
and password need to be maintained by the user for each workstation,but once logged in
the computer can be accessed by the user .
3. In the domain -based environment if the change is been made in one computer then
automatically it is made to all the other computers. However, in work group based
environment each and every computer need to be changed manually or if any change that
is been done need to be transferred to each computer (Kumar, Stecher and Tamura,
2016).
4. In the domain based environment the domain and its users and resources are been
administered by one administrator. However, in work based environment the resources
and security of each user is controlled locally on the PC's .
TASK 3
The minimum hardware and software need for installing active directory service(AD DS)
Hardware requirements
 The minimum process or requirement for installing active directory service(AD DS) is
Intel or AMD 32 bit, 2 GHz . However the processor of this computer is compatible for
installing this as its processor is Intel 2.80 GHz 2 Core
 The minimum memory that is need for installing this about 2 GB RAM .However the
computers capable of storing about 4 GB RAM.
 The page file space of about 4GB is need for this installation. However this computer is
having page file space of a bit 3.97 GB
Software requirements

 The operating system that is supported for this installation is
 Desktop OS :Windows 6
 Server OS: Windows server 2008 R2
 However, the OS of the computer is Microsoft windows 7 ultimate (Arcese and
Manocchio, 2017).
So, in a way the computer is compatible enough for installing active directory service(AD DS).

Functions of an operating system and purpose of utility software
An operating system is responsible for making a sort of interface between the user and
the system. Although it is responsible for performing various functions but its basic functions are
discussed as under :
 Resource management : An operating system can handle an efficient resource
management, whether it is about the memory or the processor or any input output
devices. It is because the operating system knows that at what time, which operation will
be performed by the central processing unit and which programs are using the memory
etc. So, it does a well efficient management of resources.
 Storage management : The storage and handling of data is also being supported by the
operating system. Also, it includes the creation of directories, files etc. Writing the
information and duplication of the data from one path to another is also being done with
the help of operating system (Kivity, Costa and Enberg, 2014).
 Acts as a mastermind : There are several features of the operating system because of
which it can be considered as a mastermind. Booting is done inside it and also, it is able
to maximize the logical memory of the system by taking use of the physical memory of
it. Also, various types of formats of files are also made available such as FAT, NTFS etc.
Utility Software and Purpose
Utility software's are the software's that help in managing and maintaining the resources
of a computer. Various common and well known examples of it can be considered as task
manager, antivirus software, disk tools or software for back ups. Out of all these, discussing the
role of utility software, task manager below :
 Task manager helps in providing detail and information of what programs are currently
running on the system (Silberschatz, Galvin and Gagne, 2014).
 It helps in sort of monitoring the running applications and processes on the system. Along
with this, it also helps by providing an option to end the task as “End Task”, specially in

cases when the system has got hang. Therefore, it can be considered as a very important
utility software as it provides a range of different functions.
CONCLUSION
Thus summing up the above report it can be concluded that operating system provides an
interface between user and computer hardware. The 5120 M memory size need to be given in
installation of Windows Sever 2012 R2 on Oracle Virtual Box. The better security and flexibility
is been given on domain-based environment. Also, it includes the fact that an operating system
provides a range of essential functions but the most important one is to make an interface
between the user and the system. Along with this, it also includes the importance of utility
software and a very common and well known example of it, task manager has also been defined
efficiently.
