RESEARCH BACKGROUND
Green Building or Sustainable Building refers to the structures that are buildup of ecofriendly or
economical materials and sources, so as to reduce pollution as well as to conserve energy. The
following research project depicts about the different factors that are directly or indirectly
related to the concept of building green buildings within a town or a city of the United
Kingdom. The motivation behind selecting this topic for the subsequent research study is the
continuous enhancement of needs to decrease pollution in the nation by adapting different
technologies. There is an assortment of different factors that influences the construction of
green building within a nation. The subsequent research proposal portrays the research study
on analyzing the opportunities of constructing Green Buildings in the town, and thus for the
successful accomplishment of this project’s aim, the perception of people of Luton (UK)
towards the Green Building would be analyzed.
The concept of green building or sustainable building is not new, but still it has not been
implemented as it was expected. The awareness among the people of the European nations
regarding the concept of green building and its several different benefits has been enhanced in
the last few years, and thus this research study majorly focuses on identifying the opportunities
of constructing green buildings or sustainable buildings by evaluating the perception of people
towards this concept. The area that is selected for this research study is Luton (UK). It is a large
town that is situated in Bedfordshire, England.
In the sector of real estate, the issues of green building or sustainable building are increasing
very rapidly all across the globe. According to the global report of McGraw-Hill Construction,
2013; approximately around 52% of the contractors, architects, engineers, etc. believes to do
60% of their work in a sustainable manner for the upcoming years (Construction, 2013). In this
modern world, more than half of the human population resides in urban areas, and this urban
population consumes around three quarters of the global energy are accountable of emitting
approximately 80% of carbon in the atmosphere. There are different factors that lie under the

building sector such as; construction, design, demolition phase, etc. that affects the building
sector’s environmental performance either directly or indirectly. The urban population of the
modern world is developing green buildings nowadays so as to ensure the reduction of
pollution from their surroundings. The reason behind this sustainable development is the
precautions that are taken by the people for health related issues, which could be caused by
the increment in the pollution (Thompson, 2017).
The construction of green buildings or sustainable buildings is done in such a way that it
reduces energy, resources, materials based on the life cycle basis, etc. The major source of
energy generation in the green buildings is the solar energy generators. Thus, these buildings
are considered as the efficient edifices. There are various different principles of sustainable site
design and Green building. These principles are as follows: green buildings utilizes the
walkways, light colored roofs, paving, etc. for reducing the urban heat island effect; on site
storm water treatment and ground water recharge are used by the sustainable buildings in an
optimized way, etc. (Hwang, et al. 2012). These principles provide motivation for the research
to be carried out on identifying the opportunities of constructing green buildings in the town
like Luton of the United Kingdom.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The following interim report, i.e. the research proposal consists of a major aim and several
supportive objectives that are required to be fulfilled. This research proposal depicts the
different facets associated to the concept of green or sustainable buildings. The main aim of
this research proposal is “To critically analyze and explore the opportunities of Green
Buildings in Luton”. In order to accomplish the aim of this research study, the perception of
citizens from Luton town of the United Kingdom would also be analyzed. The research team
would carry out different types of research methodologies on the basis of this subsequent
research proposal in future for the actual research project. The specific research objectives for
this research study include;
 To analyze the options for green building in Luton town of the United Kingdom.
 To evaluate the existing technologies related to the green building that are used in
Luton.
 To critically review the studies of different literatures proposed by the researchers
regarding the development of green buildings.
 To carry out different types of primary research methodologies for collecting data
regarding the research study.
 To identify the diverse issues and challenges that are faced in the development of
technologies related to the green buildings in Luton.
Thus, these are the aim and objectives of the subsequent research study regarding
opportunities of green building.

1. What is the perception of Luton’s citizens towards the Green or Sustainable buildings?
2. Which type of materials and building designs are used in Luton town at present?
3. How the concept of constructing green buildings in Luton have been incorporated?
4. What are the opportunities of green buildings in Luton (UK)?
5. What are the potential issues that may arise during the implementation of green
building technology in Luton?
