The sand layer is underlain by a rigid bedrock, and its dilation angle is 10o. The water table is at
the ground surface. You are required to provide a geotechnical report on the design of a circular
reinforced concrete oil tank founded on this soil profile. The tank is 5m in radius and weighs
1400 kN. The maximum height of the oil in the tank can reach 5 m. The density of the oil is 8.8
kN/m3. The foundation must satisfy a Factor of Safety (FoS) of 2 against bearing capacity.
Model the oil problem using Optum G2 and provide a report that discusses the results of your
analyses and answers the following questions.

The tank has a radius of 5 meters and weighs about 1500kN. The other load that that is
associated with the tank is that from the oil. In line with this, the oil load is estimated as:
8.8kN/m3 * 5 meters* 9.81. This however is a point load at the equilibrium. 431.64kN. with the
5m radius gives a pressure of 5500 Pascal
The load from the tank acts as a distributed load of 300kN/m. It has been indicated in the
screenshot below in terms of the stresses in the xx direction.
