Organizational Behavior: Relationship between Structure and Culture

This presentation explores the relationship between organizational structure and culture in City College and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different types of organizational culture and structure, and identifies factors that influence employee behavior. Organizational behavior

Introduction
Organizational behavior is the study which helps in comprehending the behavior and attitude of employees in diverse
situations.
This is also termed as a concept where in employees ascertains the need of leadership and motivational styles for
management of work processes.
Thus, in such context the present study has been emphasizing on City College which is a private college in North West
London and which is now a part of City group plc.
Some of the research aspects are based on Enterprise Rent- A – Car which is a car hire company and is also the largest
purchaser of cars in the world.

Task 1

1.1 Organizational culture
Culture reflects the mentality, work ethics and values that a company follows so as to provide a fair and suitable
environment to the employees. In contemporary scenario, cultural aspects plays imperative role in retaining the workforces
for longer period.
Various types of culture
Hierarchical culture: Hierarchical structure is controlled enough by the top management and that chiefly emphasizes on
stability and efficiency.
Clan culture: Clan culture is a family-like culture and that focuses on mentoring, nurturing, and doing things together.
Adhocracy: Such type of culture is dynamic and entrepreneurial with a focus on risk taking, innovation and doing things
first.
Market: Subsequent culture is result oriented and that chiefly focuses on competition and greater achievement.

Advantages:
 Hierarchical culture aids in managing disciplinary aspects.
 Clan culture develops appropriate bonding among team members
along with better communication
 Adhocracy culture enhances the scope of growth and success
through facilitating creativity and innovation.
 Market culture manages organizational operations in stable
manner.

Disadvantages:
 Hierarchical cultural seems to have adverse impact on motivational aspects of employees.
 Clan culture sometimes influences the power of top management.
 Market culture facilitates immediate and instant changes in the business activities.
 Adhocracy culture leads to burden of work on employees.

Organizational culture of City College and Enterprise
From the case study, it is explored that City College has been following clan culture since the
Principal Mr Wakefield encourages the employees to come up with good ideas. He also
invites the employees in decision making process.
On the other hand, Enterprise follows hierarchal culture in which information is communicated
from the top management to the lower management.

Organizational structure
Organizational structure refers to the technique and way of delegating authority and duties to all workforces of
an organization and this also directs the employees to communicate things as per the level of hierarchy.
Various types of structure
Departmental structure: Roles and responsibilities are delegated department wise.
Flat structure: It has fewer layers of management and wider spans of control.
Matrix structure: It pulls the employees to achieve the determined goals and objectives.

Advantages:
It helps in eradicating confusion and other sorts in job roles.
It allows the business to change rapidly to respond to the market.
It is useful for specific projects.

Disadvantages:
Sometimes, it creates the state of confusion.
The structure could influence the behavior of employees due to
wider control.
Matrix structure creates pressure on employee work.

Organizational culture of City College and Enterprise
City College has been following department structure where roles and
authorities are different for all the employees.
However, Enterprise follows centralized structure in which information
floats from top level executives to supervisors.

1.2 Relationship of structure and culture
Structure and culture both have direct relationship with each other as it is the structural aspects
that helps City College to delegate duties and authorities in adequate manner.
On the contrary, due to departmental structure, the college maintains appropriate culture among
the employees and as a result, that assists the level of employee engagement.
Structure and culture both influences the performance of City College and Enterprise as this
changes the level of communication.
Apart from this, both the structure and cultural aspects enhances responsibilities of employees
and they get more support in decision making process.
