Boeing 737 Max Jet case
Company background
The Boeing 737 Max is one of the best fourth generation of the Boeing 737 narrow body
airplanes manufactured by the Boeing Commercial Manufacturing unit or BCM. The aircraft is
mainly based on the previous generation of Boeing airplanes which were manufactured before.
The latest model of the airplane has been engineered with more efficient engines and body
designs. The airplanes is now more dynamic in order to meet the airframe modification and beat
the competitors in the business. The new series of the plane was officially brought into notice in
the public announcement on August 30, 2011. The flight took its maiden flight in the year 2016
on January 16th. With this it has successfully gained the FAA certification in the year of 2017.
There are mainly four variants of the airplane which includes like the initial version of the plane
includes 138 to more than 204 seats in a typical division of two class configuration with a range
of more than 3214 to 5236 miles. The Boeing 737 Max 7 and 8 versions are known for having a
denser version of seat like 200 to more than 390seats. Whereas the Boeing 737 Max 9 is known
for replacing the Boeing 737 Max 7 and 8 versions. The Boeing 737 Max 9 is known for offering
more than 500 to 800 seats on a total basis. The last version of the Boeing 737 Max is Boeing
737 Max 10 which is known for offering various types and classes of seats to the customers. It
also has a wider body structure which is beneficial for having long tours. According to the author
Hunter and Khalid, (2020) as of the December 2019, Boeing 737 Max has received more than
49856 firm orders which has delivered more than 388 aircrafts on a total basis.

Case analysis
Hereby after the two Boeing 737 Max 8 air craft crashes in the year of 2018 and recently
the March 2019 the company has been brought further crash notice by the Airlines Authorities.
The two air craft crashes has brought a total death of 450 people. According to the author
Hamza, Mokrani and Khelif, (2019) after these two crashes, the company has been grounded
down in the present date and has been warned not to launch any further air crafts into the air.
Also according to the author Hamza, Mokrani and Khelif, (2019) Boeing 737 Max announced in
December 2019 that it has received a suspension for the production of air crafts in the beginning
of January 2020.
After analyzing the Boeing 737 Max case it can be said that the mistakes had started
nearly few decades ago when the Boeing 737 Max had caught flat footed after its archrival
Airbus announced a new type of fuel efficient air plane which had slowly created a threatening
state for the company. The company had rushed completing the Boeing 737 Max and bringing
the market down in the market. The MCAS software was one of the latest software system that is
blamed for the deadly Lion air and as well as the Ethiopian air crashes in the recent years. Its
failure in both the cases was a true result for Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration
reluctance to the information which was not further communicated to the pilot driving the air bus
in the first case.
Organizational behavior is the process of studying or analyzing the activities and
performance of an individual or a group within an organization (Pinder 2014). Organizational
behavior examines the human behavior in the organisation environment and also determines how
this behavior impacts on the job performance, motivation, job structure, communication and
leadership. The Boeing 737 Max case shows an evidence of lack of leadership and faulty job

performance of the pilots and engineers from the organization as the core problem for the crash.
Therefore the theory of leadership is used in this case study to identify the problems and
solutions for the case.
The feature of leadership is the strongest element which influences the organizational
behavior. Leaders direct an organization in the right way which will ensure in maximizing the
organizational objectives and minimize the operational cost. Leaders also influence the
interpersonal relations make the individuals doing what the leader wants (Landis, Hill and
Harvey 2014).
The governments worldwide feel that lack of leadership was the main problem for the
crash of Boeing 737 Max. After the launch of Boeing 737 Max, their rival company Airbus
launched A320neo. Thus the corporate leaders of Boeing took drastic actions in providing fuel
efficient airplanes with short haults like A320neo. Boeing acted quickly by launching their
airplanes within nine months of the announcement of Airbus’s announcement. While doing this
the company ignored their enduring values which was their first leadership calamity. The
technical changes made in Boeing 737 Max therefore there was no requirement or pilot training.
The company sacrificed their employee and customer safety for attracting new customers. For
making the planes fuel efficient Boeing made several changes in their airplanes however the
company did not install the MCAS to complete the airplanes before their rival. The company
rushed with their design in order to meet their market needs. During safety check from the FAA,
Boeing pushed for a speedy and lighter safety approval, which they received without any
complications.
Organizational behavior also involves employee attitudes, job satisfaction, job
performance and organizational commitment of the employees. This theory of organizational

behavior signifies the extent till which the employees feel self-involved with the organization.
Job performance helps to analyze how well an individual performs a job. Job performance is
considered as an essential factor for organizational success (Breevaart, et al. 2015).
On the day of the crash the pilots ignored the alarms and trouble signs shown by the
plane which were unmistakably loud. A malfunction in the sensor was detected in the pilot’s
computer which the pilot did not pay any attention. The pilots made some changes in the
operations however the plane kept on moving downwards. The pilots did not remember any
checklist therefore they had to take help of the reference handbook.

Few of the strategies which can be used by the airlines companies in order to get rid from
the fatal accidents are mentioned below:
The Boeing Company should incorporate new units for personnel for supervising the risk.
Their job success would be directly linked to the safety of the customers and risk minimization
rather than focusing on the sales and profits metrics of the company. The main focus of an airline
company should be on the customer and employee safety rather than focusing on the sales. Sales
and marketing will not reduce the risk of the company. Strict job performance targets should be
imposed on the above mentioned job roles, failure to achieve this targets will lead to the
permanent termination of the employee.
The company must incorporate regulatory policies to ensure effective leadership within
the organization. The policies should govern over the communications and decisions of the
corporate leaders. This will help to minimize the risk of faulty and hasty decisions that would be

taken by the management leaders. Any diversion of the corporate leaders would lead to penalty
or strict actions or termination sometimes.
The company must formulate a formal communication channel which the employees in
the top hierarchy till the bottom hierarchy needs to follow. Every department should have clear
communication among each other. This would reduce the human errors to a maximum extent.
Human error has been one of the largest single factor that is responsible for various types
of commercial air accidents in the present time. The federal aviation agency is known for having
an estimation that nearly 50% of 136 career accidents in the last 20 years could be attributed due
to some failure from the part of the flight crew, where is on the other hand 25% fault was for the
maintenance part due to the ground personal inefficiency. 18% of the operation failure was also a
reminder to the encounters with severe turbulence. Therefore in this case it can be recommended
that the company should try to recruit higher medical standards pilot who have an upper age limit
of 5259 years for special air Marshal Carrier transports.
Also the company should try to implement various types of rules on pilot practices and
Copilot training. As of the Boeing 707 jet transport close brush with disaster over the North
Atlantic on February 3, 1959 it had wild replication in the aviation world as well as it has
imposed stick measure on the air career regulation. After various types of certification issued to
the captains in command of the year liners the company should implement a rule that each and

types of medical examination given by a designated physician on and regular basis of every 6
month. The company should also try to provide special counselling services for the pilots who
