2BTEC HND MARKERTING: ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOUR
Introduction:
The report aims at providing an insight into various concepts and theories and in the
organizational concept and thereby applying them on the business situation of Samsung
(samsung.com 2018). Samsung is a multinational conglomerate that has headquarters in the
Samsung Town of Seoul. It is comprised of various affiliated businesses most of which
united under Samsung brand. The report commences with a discussion on the Path-goal
theory leadership styles that helps in improving productivity and performance. The report
also shows the application of this theory on Samsung. The report also put forward a
discussion on social capital theory and it application on Samsung. There is also discussion on
contingency theory and its application on Samsung.
Concept and Philosophy:
1. Path-goal Theory Leadership Styles that Improve Team Performance and
Productivity
The Path Goal model represents a theory which is based on the stating the leadership
behaviour or style that ideally suits the work environment and the employee for achieving a
goal (Malik 2013). The goal helps in increasing the motivation, satisfaction and
empowerment of the employees so that they become the productive associates of the
organization. There are three basic steps of the theory: The first includes the determination of
the environmental and employee characteristic, the second includes the selection of
leadership style and the third focuses on the motivational factors that helps the employee in
achieving success.

3BTEC HND MARKERTING: ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOUR
The application of the path goal theory in Samsung involved motivating the
employees, directing other’s activities and selection of an effective channel of
communication along with resolution of conflicts. The offices of the secretaries take up a
leading role in the company since they ensure coordination in the face of the conflicts. The
creation of synergies takes place via the through the process of involuntary cooperation as the
business units needs to accept the resolution. Moreover, the Secretarial officers spread the
philosophy of the company along with improving business information and coordination
shared amongst the affiliates. The philosophy involving living by the stronger values
motivated the employees of the company and acted as the key to the good business (Soieb,
Othman and D'Silva 2013). The values encompass excellence, people, integrity, change and
co-prosperity along with the code of conduct of the Samsung that helps in influencing each
decision.
2. Social Capital Theory
Social capital represent the form of the cultural and economic capital where the social
networks remains central, transactions remain marked by the reciprocity, cooperation and
trust and the market agents produces the goods and services(4). However, the theory of the
Social Capita gained prominence via the amalgamation of the classical theory of sociology
along with the description of intangible capital form. Thus, individuals can make use of the
social capital belonging to their close networks for achieving the private objectives and
ensure that the groups can make use of it for enforcing particular behaviour and norms.
Application of in Respect to Samsung
According to Social Capital Index, countries having abundance of the social capital
achieves higher levels in terms of not only social stability and living conditions (Dubos

2017). Thus, for becoming an advanced country, Korea should look forward to seeking
capital that would also necessary provide boost to companies like Samsung. There is a lack of
trust factor amongst the Korean people. According to World Values Survey (2014), close to
around 30.2 percent of the Korean response portrayed that they trusted people although it
proved to be less trusting compared to the ones in the advanced countries. The Korean society
is also unable to show the trust factor in the fair execution of the government laws that also
lowers the public trust in government and results in the frequent objections to the policy
decisions. The root of corruption in the country revolves around the regionalism, alumni
connections and the kinship. Therefore, the network existing within companies like Samsung
has closed vertical operation that weakens the external networks in the industrial clusters.
Based in Korea, Samsung also exhibits a lower technological cooperation.
3. Contingency Theory
The contingency theory refers to the organizational theory that puts forward that there
exists no ideal way in organizing a corporation, in leading it and in making decisions (Otley
2016). However, the most favourable path of action depends on the external and internal
situation.
The Fred Fiedlar focuses on the contingency model that revolves around the
leadership in the organizations. The model portrays the relationship between the favourable
condition and the leadership style of the organization. Fiedler described that favourable
condition of a situation on the three dimensions derived empirically. This includes:
1. Relationship between the leader and member is higher if the leader accepted and
respected by his followers
2. The degree of the task structure is quite high if it is well structured

3. Positional power of the leader is higher if he has a great deal of power and authority
The situations of the leader remain favourable if all the dimensions remain high.
Application of the Theory on Samsung
In the context of the contingency model, as per the first dimension, the senior
manager in the energy division of Samsung follows a leadership style that is a combination of
participative, authoritarian and the delegate style (Taylor and Taylor 2014). He also shared a
relationship with the subordinates where he provided encouragement and support to the
employees, makes them a part of the process of decision making and has necessary respect
for the employees. In terms of the second dimension, the task structure is low since the task
performed by the group remained undefined as it involved research with the newer
technologies. In addition, the task was also unstructured and unclear. In context of the leader
position power, the senior manager implements formal authority over the subordinates. He
used the power for planning, directing work and reward and evaluating the people.
Conclusion:
To conclude one can say that the report provides a proper analysis of the concepts and
behaviour of the organizational behaviour and their applications in Samsung. The values of
the path goal theory encompass excellence, people, integrity, change and co-prosperity along
with the code of conduct of the Samsung that helps in influencing each decision. In terms of
the social capital theory, Samsung can reach higher social capital index if it can overcome
hurdles like lower trust, backward law of the country and the group’s egoism. The report also
successfully provides an insight into how the contingency theory aligns with the senior
manager of the group.
