Paradigm Shift
1
Paradigm Shift refers to the change in the perspective or in the system of thinking.
This shift can be related to anything, it can be change in relationship, in studies, in someone’s
marriage, at home, or even just in the changes in the perception or in the way of looking at
the world (Covey, 2004). In the following essay, I wish to reflect upon a paradigm shift that
had taken place in my life.
I always had been a student of science and had decided to pursue my higher studies on
the same. However, contextually, I could not pursue my higher studies in science and had
taken up Sociology, instead. Initially, I did not like the subject, for it was too easy and too
boring, but with time, I saw myself with a changed attitude. The subject had changed my
perceptions of the world and society. I found myself, with a broadened mind, with more
ability to accept and with less generalised attitude. The subject had also changed my views
regarding the conducts that take place in the society. It made me think about the people,
whom I never considered to be important, it made my views to get changed regarding the
structure of the society and the position of men and women in the society. The discourse
helped me to understand the underlying meanings and the consequences of the social
phenomenon. Moreover, the discourse changed and developed me as a human being.
Therefore, in my personal life, taking up sociology for my higher studies, contributed
in my paradigm shift.
