TASK 1- Consideration of social, economic and environmental factors for
development of project
Background of current and previous project
The London City Airport (LCY) was constructed in 1980s and was inaugurated by Queen
Elizabeth II in 1987 as a part of regeneration plan London dock. The airport became popular
with its business flyers and continued to grow in 2005 with the construction of light rail which
created easy and quick transportation to LCY. Its closeness to Canary Wharf which is a business
airport and also its flights which landed on holiday destinations has helped the airport to its
continuous growth with the demand for its flights increasing every year. The number of
passengers it carry has grown to 40% in last 5 years by reaching to about 4.8 million passengers
which are expected to increase to about 11 million by 2035 (Ajmal And et. al., 2018). However,
various restrictions are put on its capabilities to carry the increasing number of passengers by the
London Borough of Newham which limits the capacity of carrying passengers to 6.5 million a
year and further putting limits on the number of flights per year to 111,000. Also operation time
are limited wherein the airport has to remain closed between 12:30 on Saturdays to 12:30 on
Sundays.
The LCY started a City Airport Development Programme (CADP) worth £480 million
so that the terminal building can be extended by 24500m² and a 3-storey passenger pier and 8
aircraft parking stands can be built. Also the airport intended to extend its aircraft taxiway along
its runway. This programme will help the airport to accommodate the increasing number of
passengers up to a limit of 6.5 million per year. This will also help the company to reduce its air
traffic and also will enable it to host aircraft that produce less noise which will help in reducing
noise pollution and will increase its sustainability (Jamshidi and et. al., 2015). This will also
make LCY the first airport to install a digital air traffic control tower in UK which will help in
increasing the safety of the aircraft and its passengers. In this report the advantage and
disadvantages of the project along with the challenges that are faced by LCY will be discussed in
detail.
The social sustainability advantages and disadvantages of project:
Sustainability is related to utilizing the available resources in such a manner that the
meets of current generation is met without compromising with the requirements of future

generation. For the success of a country it is important that social, environmental and economic
sustainability is achieved which will help in improving the quality of life of citizens in the
present and in future.
LCY currently employ 65% of the local people and gives them fair wages along with
motivating them to progress in their career. CADP will help in generating job opportunities for
local people which will help in effective circulation of income in the economy which will help in
the economic development of the country. Approximately 500 jobs will be created while
construction work and after the CADP more than 2,000 jobs will be generated. The expansion of
terminal building will help in increasing the speed of transit which means that arrival passenger
can reach to train in 15 minutes while the departure passenger will reach to their planes in 20
minutes which will help in enhancing the customer experience by reducing the time for which
they have to wait at the airport (Kılkış and Kılkış, 2016).
LCY has contributed majorly in delivering benefits to the East London community via
training, education, employment etc. and has also helped in bringing investment in the East
London area thereby improving the quality of life of people. Under the CADP the airport is
planning to build UK's first digital air traffic control centre which will replace the old towers that
uses 360 degree HD cameras with zooming capabilities. This will help in increasing the safety of
airport operations as the airfield can be viewed in detail which will help in making effective
decisions. This will increase the social sustainability benefit as the safety of travellers,
employees and residents and will also empower future generations by encouraging use of
technology in improving the safety systems.
However some of the disadvantages are that during catastrophes when electricity systems
go down, the technology cannot be used which will increase the risks. This problem can be dealt
with by building viewing tower that has windows so that humans can view the fields along with
installing 360 degree HD cameras so that problems of electricity and human errors can be dealt
with efficiently. Along with this other disadvantage is that with increase in number of flights the
noise pollution will increase which will disturb the peace of mind of residents. Further air
pollution will increase with the increase in aircraft which will cause premature deaths.
The economic sustainability advantages and disadvantages of project:
Economic sustainability is the growth in long term by reducing the negative impacts on
cultural, environmental and social aspects on society. By London City Airport development

programme number of traveller will increase which will benefit UK economy. LCY holds
greatest share of UK travellers and about 52% of business travellers. The expansion programme
will help in increasing investment in East London and will help in its development. Also as the
connectivity of globe will increase it will facilitate expansion of companies which will contribute
in economic development. LCY creates about 2,000 jobs and also will increase the economy of
UK from £0.5bn to £1.3bn annually. It will also help in building more retail shops and
restaurants and contribute further in economic development (Monsalud, Ho and Rakas, 2015).
LCY had 133,000 passengers in 1987 and majorly the people travelled for business
purposes while in 2017 it had 4.5m travellers and people travel both for leisure and business
purposes. The increasing problem of limited flights in the most preferable time slots in
increasing which demands the need for expansion of the airport.
However the local people are concerned about the increase in house and rent prices due
to development of the airport which might force people to relocate themselves to cheaper
locations. Also this will attract large businesses like Tesco which will affect the customer base
and profits of small businesses in the area which has brought opposition in expansion of LCY.
The environmental sustainability advantages and disadvantages of project:
LCY aims at meeting the increasing demands for air travel in a responsible and
sustainable manner by allowing the growth of airport sustainably. The London City Airport
Development Programme aims at constructing 8 aircraft stands which are equal to 11 football
pitches which will enable in accommodating new generation aircraft called 'Bombardier C-
Series'. These aircraft are quieter which will help in controlling noise pollution which will
improve the quality of life of residents along with the local wildlife. Also these aircraft are more
fuel efficient which means that less pollution will be caused and also they will enable the
travellers to reach to various tourists destinations around the globe. Also business trips will
increase which will help in creating a large potential for global business relations (Ryerson,
2016).
LCY also promise to be more carbon neutral by 2020 while aiming at reaching to zero net
carbon emissions by 2050. The project managers have included many environmental
sustainability factors which will help in making the project more environment efficient as the
project is facing criticism from environmental campaigners. These campaigners fear that the

project will increase noise pollution, use of fuel will increase and more traffic will be created in
London.
LCY's claims of becoming carbon neutral while increasing the number of flights is a far
to be fetched promise as in order to lower the temperature of globe it is important to decrease the
numebr of flights. Also in order to meet the aims of Paris Agreement it is important to reduce the
amount of greenhouse gases that are emitted by the aircraft. Numerous countries like Japan, USA
and Australia has increased the kerosene taxes on flights. Also the EU petition to introduce this
kind of tax in its respective member states is under activity which requires about 1 million
signatures by May, 2020 .
TASK 2- Continuing Professional Development
Mentee support
Unavoidable mistakes can be made due to the person being young and inexperienced
which are fine to make as long as they help in the learning process of the person. Having an
experienced mentor can help in reducing the mistakes so that best outcomes are achieved. For a
first year student who is new to the university it is important to have a mentor who can give
guidance to plan on activities on how they will be carried out. As a mentor I set out weekly
targets for my mentee so that target can be achieved. Also they have my contact details to contact
me in case of any queries (Shen and Cao, 2016).
Knowledge transfer
As I meet my mentee I ask him to set a goal for himself as it the most important step in
being successful. My mentee said that his goal was to get a first-class degree. Next we discussed
about how this goal can be achieved in which we came out with important things like : first,
attendance is extremely important and the student must attend each and every lesson and take
notes of lessons learned. Second, a separate folder must be maintained for each module which
will help in making neat and understandable notes which can be later revised to score good. Also
I told him about how motivation can help in working hard to be successful in the university so I
told him to remember his motivation so that he could achieve his dreams. I also asked him to
maintain a schedule including deadlines so that projects can be completed within the set
deadlines. I also helped him with AutoCAD and referencing the assignments. I further detailed
him about the assignment checking service and all other services that university hub can provide.

Also I told him about the importance of effective communication skills which can help him in
scoring better.
Challenges encountered
Mentorship has several challenges like I faced the challenge of meeting my mentee for
the first time. I had sent an email and got no response but I got a response to my second e-mail
where the mentee said that he did not notice the first e-mail. When I met my mentee I told him to
download the 'Outlook app' on his mobile phone so that he could get a notification as and when
he received an e-mail. The next challenge I faced was giving negative feedback to my mentee
when he was unable to meet his targets as I thought that it would decrease his morale. This I
overcame by simply discussing with the mentee about what went wrong and how these mistakes
can be improved in the future.
Skill developed
Credit of success of mentee is always given to the mentor however mentorship leads to
the growth and improvement in experience of both the mentor and the mentee (Wang and et. al.,
2016). This project helped me learn about communication such as when I can and cannot call or
when I can send an e-mail. I also learnt about how to build trust, listen carefully and how to
motivate others. This also helped in enhancing my leadership and management qualities which
helped in increasing my confidence (Martin-Nagle and Klauber, 2015).
