Old age pensions are a topic of global concern as many fear that these schemes cannot be sustained as populations age. This is referred to as the Pensions Crisis. In Trinidad and Tobago, the Central Statistical Office estimated the 65-plus population at 122,412 in its June 30, 2022 mid-year population report. One provision for people over 65 in TT is the Senior Citizens’ Pension, which is a grant accessible to citizens over 65 who meet certain eligibility criteria. Social Development and Family Services Minister Donna Cox said that giving every citizen who turned 65 a pension would be unsustainable and that the pension is intended for vulnerable people. The ministry aims to continue taking care of TT’s senior citizens but recognizes that some people may believe they are entitled to the pension when they are not.
