AI Summary
This report details the process of designing and conducting a pilot study for a questionnaire aimed at understanding the perception of learning English among Romanian secondary school students. The researcher's initial aim was to assess the effectiveness of the questionnaire through a pilot study involving a small sample of students. The report outlines the questionnaire's structure, including sections for questions and a feedback mechanism with a five-point scale for responses. It discusses the rationale behind specific questions, such as those gauging students' passion for English, its perceived benefits, and the influence of external factors. The piloting procedure involved administering the questionnaire to three students, which led to revisions. The researcher identified and addressed issues such as question repetition and the relevance of certain inquiries, resulting in a refined questionnaire that yielded more effective feedback. The report emphasizes the importance of this iterative process in ensuring the quality and interpretability of the data collected. The final questionnaire was effective because the students provided appropriate feedback that enhanced the research findings.

INTRODUCTION
The researcher’s main aim of designing the questionnaire for the study is to enhance a thorough
analysis of the perception of learning English in Romanian Secondary School class. The

researcher has to conduct a pilot study to ascertain the effectiveness of the formulated questions
to be answered by the correspondents through the questionnaires. This report aims to analyze the
overall thinking used by the researcher when she was designing her initial questionnaire for her
research. After the pilot study, the researcher shall make an improvement to the initial
questionnaire to enhance the effectiveness of the feedback received from the correspondents.
Design of the questionnaire
The questionnaire shall consist of two main sections, a section for questions and the section for
the feedback. The feedback shall be categorized into five main sections numbered 1 to 5

(Bulmer, 2014). If individuals strongly agree with the question they shall tick in section 1,
section 2 if they agree, and section 3 if they are neutral, section 4 if they disagree to some point
and section 5 if they totally disagree with the question. The questionnaire seeks to establish the
perception of Romanian year 12 students in relation to learning English in school. There are a
series of questions which can be used for the study so as to obtain the desired feedback from the
students to facilitate the research findings.
The researcher can ask the students if they are passionate in learning English in their school.
This question is very important because there feedback shall give the clear picture of their
general attitude towards this subject. The researcher can also ask them if there is any advantage
in learning English. This is crucial because in most cases, students are usually passionate in
studying a subject that is beneficial to them hence the feedback given would determine whether
English can continue to be taught or not.
Students can be asked whether they find English easy to comprehend after being taught in class
so as to enable tutors devise effective ways of delivering the content to the students. The
frequency of learning the subject should also be ascertained so as to determine the effectiveness

of the teaching timetable. The researcher should try to establish whether these students make an
effort of communicating in English in their routine activities in school. This is important because
it shall enable the researcher to know how serious the students are in learning this language. The
purpose for learning English should also be ascertained among the learners. The feedback
received from them shall provide a clear picture of the extent of the significance of the language
in their present and future lives.
It should be established whether they really have to learn English among very many languages
that exist like French, Germany, and Spanish etc. This is very crucial as it shall clearly depict
why English has been preferred to other foreign languages. The students can also be asked
whether they have been influenced to learn English with a reason. This is important because it
provides a clear perception of the society towards this language.
PILOTING PROCEDURE
The researcher had to ascertain the effectiveness of her first questionnaire by administering it to
a sample population of three students in the Romanian year 12 students (mark, 2017). There are

some questions which had been repeated especially when she had asked whether they found
learning English useful and whether it assisted them to learn other subjects. As a result the
researcher had to drop one question and proceed with the other as depicted in the new
questionnaire. There are some questions which were more challenging for the correspondents in
the initial questionnaire such as whether speaking English would expose them to better jobs.
That question was not relevant because job markets require more of skills than language. An
individual might be very skilled in programming in U.S.A but does not speak English. As a
result the question was blotted out in the new questionnaire. The researcher found out that the
final questionnaire was very effective because the students gave appropriate feedback that
enhanced the research findings (mark, 2017).
Most of the students enjoyed to learn English stating that it’s an international language hence
they wanted to communicate effectively with people from various countries in the social media.
