Introduction:
In the assignment, a discussion will be carried out on the personal and professional development
in the travel and tourism sector. The tourist industry in the UK has been emerging vastly and
developing a lot of opportunities for the localities as well as the other backpackers. In the
assignment, learning will be gained about the ways in which present skills and competencies can
be gained. As an assistant manager at Travelodge Hotel development activities will be planned
along with reflecting the learnings against the aims and purposes of the development plan. The
development plans in the hotel will be carried out on the basis of feedback and evaluation.
The role of personal and professional development has been increasing in the life of all
individuals currently for which the organizations prefer the individual to understand its concepts.
The development will be done in both personal and professional context which can be seen as a
most useful tactic for uplifting a person’s personal skills and aptitudes. A PPT presentation will
also be presented in the assignment. An individual can develop his skills and competencies with
the assistance of self-managed learning. Solutions for work-based problems will be provided
along with the ways to utilize time management strategies.

The altered approaches for self-managed learning can be gained by utilizing various theories and
development programs. As an assistant manager at Travelodge hotel, one can learn through the
research as a task of their assignment. Self-managed learning is basically about the staff
members and the other people working along for their development. Some of the approaches for
self-managed learning are,
Social networks: There are diverse social networks such as Facebook and Twitter where
individuals spend a majority of their time. At these platforms, individuals share the data as well
as their knowledge. The knowledge that they get from other people on this platforms can be
applied to their own lives which will be assisting them to access their own capabilities and skills
(Cassidy, 2014).
Seminars and conferences: A lot of data and learning can be gained from the seminars and
conferences where individuals present the data about a certain topic or on their own learnings.
Conferences and seminars benefit the individuals to develop confident and their speaking skills
can also be enhanced. The fear of speaking in front of people from different background and
knowledge can be eradicated completely (Kerzner and Kerzner, 2017).
Internet: Internet is a platform that consists of information about everything in the world. By
surfing the websites individuals can not only carry on their further studies but also gain
information about the different aspects such as management studies of the hotel industry. The
individuals can also know about the current trends in the hotel industry and also take further
career decisions (Graves, 2013).
The best suitable approach among this is of seminars and conferences where the individuals can
present their own experiences to others and through which new learnings can be gained by the
other staff members the confidence can also get boosted and enhanced along with the knowledge
and speaking skills, the employees can get more efficient in handling the customers and
communicate with them without any hesitation.

1.2 Propose ways in which lifelong learning in personal and professional contexts could be
encouraged
As an assistant manager at Travelodge hotel, there are many approaches that can be taken into
consideration for developing the lifelong learning of the employees and encouraging it. Self-
evaluation can assist in achieving all the goals and objectives of the self-managed learning at
Travelodge hotel. The skills developed of the employees will be very much helpful in handling
the clients and even their communication skills will be enhanced which will benefit them in
generating quick relations with the customers (Jackson, 2015).
A SWOT analysis can also be carried out to develop an understanding of the strength,
weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The lifelong learning can also be encouraged by reducing
the work stress which is possible by carrying out certain physical and mental exercises.
Continuous learning can also be done which incorporates of growing into the personality from
the past experiences, the growth of skills, talents, and behaviors can be done. Effective
leadership can also be said as a part of lifelong learning which will be assisting in understanding
the ways of influencing the other people and make them work (Meichenbaum, 2017).
