Type 2 Diabetes in West Virginia
The rate of adult diabetes is approximately 16.2% which is the highest in the United States of
America. According to studies, pre-diabetes is diagnosed in 1 out of 12 adults in West Virginia.
Around 15%-30% of people with pre-diabetes proceed to develop type 2 diabetes after 5 years if
they do not engage in moderate physical activities. Reports have also revealed that type 2
diabetes is among the leading causes of death in West Virginia and the entire United States of
America. Men are at the highest risk of having type two diabetes and pre-diabetes but they are
also less likely to know about their pre-diabetes condition until late ("Explore Diabetes in West
Virginia | 2018 Annual Report", 2019). 15.1% of Adults from American/Indian Alaska Native
have diabetes followed by Non-Hispanic adults at 12.7%, Hispanic adults at 12.1%, and Asians
at 8% ("Explore Diabetes in West Virginia | 2018 Annual Report", 2019). Additionally, type 2
diabetes is highly prevalent among people with low levels of education in West Virginia.

failure. According to studies, these four conditions affect the communities in West Virginia
leading to more than 50% of deaths. In 2017, 2.5% of diabetic patients died in West Virginia.
This mortality rate could be higher because type 2 diabetes also leads to other serious health
conditions like cardiovascular diseases ("West Virginia Diabetes Death Statistics | LiveStories",
2019). It is also important to note that this condition costs West Virginia approximately $2.5
billion every year. The mortality rates of diabetes are high (45.5%) in men as compared to
women (37.8%) ("Diabetes and Health Equity in West Virginia: A Review", 2019). The
mortality rate also increases with age with more individuals aged 65 years succumbing to this
