INTRODUCTION
In the competitive world, it is very important for the individuals to develop skills and
knowledge so that they are able to compete with others. For that purpose, personal development
is very essential as it assists individuals to enhance performance (Maharaja, 2018). Personal
development is the need of every individual if they want to grow and success in their career. This
report aims to discuss the importance of personal and professional development as it is very
crucial in order to get success. This report will be discussing short term, medium term and long
term goals with the assistance of personal examples. It also discusses personal development plan
which is the blue print for achieving the set objectives and goals.
TASK
Personal and professional development
Personal and professional development refers to the process in which an individual and
organisation engage in the process of learning. This process is very crucial for individuals as they
can improve their weak areas effectively (Ekaterine and Natalia, 2017). Both personal and
professional development is slightly different from each other. This is necessary for
organisations that they should understand the meaning or concept of both terms and their
importance.
Personal development is defined as the development of personal skills and knowledge
which helps them to achieve their personal goals. In the competitive business environment, it is
found that personal development becomes essential for their successful career. In personal
development, the goals are set for the purpose of improving a character, capabilities and skills
(Lejeune, Beausaert and Raemdonck, 2021). This will helps individuals to assess the areas which
need to improve the potential of individuals. For achieving the set objectives, it is necessary to
create an actionable steps which assists in measuring the improvement and target. Personal
development can be done at University time as at that stage, they are learning new knowledge
and skills which assists them to do a personal development.
Professional development is also important in addition to the personal development. An
individual cannot grow their career if they are ficus on professional development. In the
professional development, organisations are doing investments so that they can achieve their
targets. For organisations, human resource is the most available resources as they know that

without human resources they are not able to achieve their objectives even in the technological
environment. So they invest in training and development activities which helps in increasing the
employability skills. Professional development is also necessary fort individuals point of view as
they are increasing their capabilities which helps them to perform more effectively in the
organisation. It increases their career options.
Short-term goals value with three important goals
Short term goals are defined as the goals that are mainly focuses on achieving the
objectives within a tenures of less than 1 year. These goals are the basic steps for individuals as
they can accomplishing their dreams and desires by achieving short term goals. It is very
important for individuals to understand the importance of short term goals as every person has
set of desires which they want to achieve but it can be only accomplishing when they formulate
short term goals (Roberts and et.al., 2020). It provide motivation as well as encouragement to the
individuals when they achieve their short term goals. It is easy to achieve. For example, a person
wants to buy an expensive car. For that purpose, it is very important for a person to earn a good
income which is not easy as day by day the competition is increasing and due to this it is
necessary to learn knowledge and skills. This can be possible with the help of formulating a short
term goals. There are three personal examples of short term goals are mentioned below:
ï‚· Confidence is very important and that's why I want to increase my confidence level.
ï‚· Punctuality is necessary as I believed that work should be complete in the time. That's
why I want to complete my assessments on time.
ï‚· I want to increase my focus on things which I doing in the present time so that it will be
completed effectively.
Medium-term goals value with three personal examples
Medium term goals are defined as the set of objectives that are taking more than 1 year
and less than 3 year. This is crucial for individuals to set the objective which are taking less than
3 years. It is found that an individual cannot achieve their dreams and desires by achieving short
term goals. That's why it is very important for individual to understand the importance of
medium term goals (Demir, 2017). It is found that medium term goals and short term goals are
the stepping stones of long term goals this reflects that an individual can achieve their long term
goals only by accomplishing short and medium term goals. Three personal examples of medium
term goals are mentioned below:

term goals for them (Cernev and Fenner, 2020). In respect of organisation, every company wants
to get success and growth for a long term period. This is crucial for the individual that they
should set some long term goals that motivates them to achieve and accomplish goals and
objectives of short term and medium term. Long term goals take more than 5 years that's why for
the motivation purpose an individual needs to set short term and long term goals. These goals are
helping to achieve a long term goal. For example, a person wants to become a most rich person
in the world. That's why it is very important to set long term goals as this a person cannot
become a richest person in just 5 years. They take more than 5 years which becomes an ultimate
objective of the person. In order to become the richest person, they need to achieve their short as
well as medium term goals as both are the stepping stones of long term goals. This goal can be
better understand with the help of below personal examples:
ï‚· I want to become a HR manager of a reputed organisation as it is very crucial for me.
This is the base of career which provide me many benefits if I get successful.
ï‚· I believed that I would be a employees who is the reason of company's success and that's
why I want to be very creative which assists in taking the organisation into heights.
ï‚· I am doing a management degree that's why I want to gain maximum experience in
management.
Value of a Personal Development Plan
Personal development plan is the procedure in a detail manner in which an individual
identify the areas which they want to improve. This will helps them to accomplish their set
objectives and improves weak areas (Shaheen and Hameed, 2020). It is very important for to

discussed below:
ï‚· Personal development plan is the blueprint that provides step by step actions which
should be taken by individual (Bukharina, 2018). It is very important for an individual
that they should follow their plan so that they can overcome with their weak areas.
ï‚· With the help of personal development plan, an individual is able to identify and analyse
their goals and objectives effectively. They can easily find that which areas they need to
work on.
ï‚· It also give guidelines and directions to the individual which assists individual to take a
right step.
ï‚· It reduces the wastage of time and money if individual is formulating a personal
development plan. For example, a person wants to improve their communication skills
but if they are recognise the weak areas then how they can work on it. That's why it is
important for individual to develop a plan which assist in developing personal skills.
ï‚· It provides clear actions to the individual that what they have to do in what time. It also
helps in aching the goals within time limit.
Above stated points reflects that personal development plan is very important for an
individual as it works like a action plan. With the help of personal development plan, a person is
able to achieve their goals and objectives effectively and they also able to improve their weak
areas (Kivimäki and Meriluoto, 2018). This is also crucial for the purpose of successful career. It
helps individual to grow and get success in the future. This will also helps in generating
employability skills that makes a person competitive and successful.

important for an individual as everyday the competition of business environment is increasing.

discussed professional development. There are three types of goals which are discussed in the
