INTRODUCTIONA professional leadership can be defined as a process to inspire and guide group ofpeople in order to achieve organisational goals. Sainsbury’s is the 3rd largest chain ofsupermarket in United Kingdom. It has 16.9% share of supermarket sector. it was founded byJohn James Sainsbury in 1869. It sales various products with high quality at affordable prices. This report will show the importance of leadership in the company. Leaders have variousskills like decision making skills, effective communication skill and ability to solve problemsat their own. All these abilities and skills help them to motivate their employees in theircareer development and gain their determined goals (AnRaelin, 2016). This report will alsoshow the development plan of leaders which shows them their strengths and weaknesses bywhich they can improve their abilities and also remove their weaknesses which becomesbarrier in their growth of success.TASK 1Leadership skills and characteristicsLeader is the person who lead and guide the group of people in an organization. Whomotivates all the members of the company in an effective manner with the aim of achievingthe determined goals of the company. There are various skills that is important for leaders inorder to operate business and gain company’s vision. Some of the skills that is required forme as a leader of Sainsbury's retailer.Communication skills: Communication plays an important role because it solvesvarious problems which arises at workplace. It is important to clearly define and explain allthe information related company among staff members. Communication not only includeinforming but also it involves active listening, articulating. As a leader it is important for meto listen employees needs and issues. When leader listen them carefully then they feelrespected and valued. This directly helps to the company as it decreases labour turnover.Motivation: Motivation also plays an important role in the company. As a leader it isessential to have this skill in order to motivate their employees towards achieving company’sgoals and objectives (Phaneuf and et.al., 2016). For motivating their employees, they adoptsdifferent ways of motivating such as rewards and recognition to those employees who puttheir extra efforts and do all the tasks in an effective manner. It also provides responsibilitiesfor contributing more in the company and for increasing their morale and self esteem.Motivation includes convincing, providing rewards, team building, thanking staff etc.

Problem solving: Problem solving is another main skill that is important for leader ofSainsbury’s to have. There are various problems and issues arises in the company which needto be solved in an effective manner and at the right time. When a leader solve problemsrelated staff members then they try to solve that problem step by step. It is good for not onlymembers of the company but also for the company as it helps them in decision makingprocess and removing obstacles in the growth of their company. It also makes employees ableto complete their projects and tasks on the given time. Integrity: Integrity behaviours and skill can be defined as to be loyal, honest andtruthfulness. When leader have this skill then they behave and treat with their all theemployees with equally. They do not discriminate among employees on the basis of ability,characteristics, gender and age. This type of leaders seeks and focus to hire employees whopossess a strong sense of integrity. Positivity: Positivity skill is also important because it helps in conflict managementand encouraging employees of Sainsbury’s. Positivity skills and behaviour of leader helps increating a healthy and happy working environment. When employees feel happy and work inthis positive environment then they are more likely to work productively and effectively.They also have the willingness to put in long hours when required.Ability to adapt to be changes: The another skill which is important in a leader is tohave the ability to adapt situations that need to be change. To adapt changes withoutinfluencing is very important for the leader of Sainsbury’s. They have to faces manyproblems due to changes in external factors such as political, economical, environmental andsocial. These factors have positive and negative impact so for removing this type of situationsit is essential to have this ability. innovative leaders also try to focus on bring new ideas toproduce products and services and offer them to their customers. It makes able the companyto being in a competition.Ability to teach and mentor: The main purpose and responsibility of a leader is tolead and mentor to their employees. Every type of employee need some training and guidancein order to remove the chances of mistakes and errors from their work (Mumford and et.al.,2017). Effectively teaching to employees and guide tell them to ways of doing workincreases productivity of them as well as of the company.Dependability: The ability to take decisions on own basis and solve problems at theirown is important for leaders. In Sainsbury’s it is not possible for the manager to oversee allthe situations and operations and also handle all situations so it is essential for the leader tohave dependability.
