INTRODUCTION
Glaxosmithkline is operating in a UK pharmaceutical industry. This industry is very
competitive in nature and in this report mentioned firm is selected for understanding aspects of
leadership and training. In this report, a process of leadership development plan is given. Further
its implementation process is also given. After that deviation is identified by comparing actual
training results with standard objectives. Further, reasons of such deviation are identified and
ways are suggested that can be followed in order to achieve training objectives. At the end of the
report, employee welfare program is discussed in detail and an attempt is made to identify all
positive impacts of employee welfare program on an organisation. As a manager I think that
skills are core to success of any organisation. In order to ensure that organisation will have
appropriate skill set I will prepare a personal development plan. This plan will be used to
develop skill set of the employees. Ultimately, organisation will grow at a rapid pace.
Executive summary
As per annual report the vision of Glaxosmithkline make available good quality of
medicines in order to give quality of life to human beings. In respect to this company is giving
due attention on commencing new research and development projects. For completing a vision
company is continuously involve in developing new medicines. Currently, also company is
operating many projects on its research and development cell that are located in several nations
of the world. Moreover, it is also increasing its research and development team in order to ensure
that it has sufficient amount of intellectual capital to complete projects within deadline. This
shows management commitment towards production of innovative medicines. In this direction
company is making excellent efforts from past few years. Company main objective is to increase
people access to health care services all over the world. In this regard also firm makes
investment in several geographical areas across the world. Along with this management of the
mentioned firm is also promoting welfare culture at its workplace. In respect to this, company is
organising several welfare activities time to time at facility. Hence, it can be said that

Strategic direction is considered as the combination of its vision, mission and objectives
so that values and beliefs drive to attain organizational goals. In order to achieve this vision of
Glaxosmithkline business needs to focus upon its research and development department so that
innovative vaccines and biopharmaceuticals has been introduced (GSK. 2014). There are two
kinds of strategies namely deliberate and emergent strategies. Mintzberg argued that strategy
must be seen in wide perspective. According to him, deliberate strategies are those tactics that
comes in existence due to intention of the management (Glaser and Strauss, 2009).
With the changing business environment the company changes their vision, mission and
objectives of the pharmaceutical company. The key vision, mission and objectives supports the
company in attaining the strategic direction that supports them to sustain in the long run. Mission- The key mission of Glaxosmithkline company is to become the leading
science-led global healthcare company in the pharmaceutical industry. Along with this
another mission of GSK is to focus on their employment practices so that staff within the
company may feel valued and even respected and empowered at the workplace. Company's Vision- Along with this the vision of company is to improve the quality of
individual lives through providing innovative medication, vaccines as well as health care
products. Furthermore, the objective of Glaxosmithkline company also ensure change in
the value chain that is they ensure company to be carbon neutral by the year 2050.
 Aims and objectives- The key aims and objectives of the pharmaceutical company is to
improve their research and development department so that they can innovate in the
medication so that they may be able to prolong pipeline of the medication that is
significant for the treatment and care of the service users. Along with this another
objectives is to meet the expectation of society and community through offering them
low dose medication.
From the above both the strategies pharmaceutical company must focuses on the
deliberate strategy that ensure formal planning that ensure accomplishing the vision through
emphasis on systematic formulation of strategies.
However, introducing such changes helps in intending to modernise the firm and
ensuring more growth with less risk. Thus, it helps company to appraise shareholders who

goals. As per the view of (Grime, 2006), leaders within GSK undertakes varied skills such as
conflict solving and negotiation skills so that success can be attained. Further communication
skills is crucial which needs to be improved my leaders. Developing all such skills helps leaders
to encourage them to work effectively and efficiently. However, (Wheatley, 2010), argued that
leaders of GSK lacks in assessing the specific skills required to accomplish the strategic
direction.
From the above identified aims and objectives of the company GSK must focuses on
proper direction therefore, the leaders required certain skills for attaining the strategic ambition
related with attaining the leading position in pharmaceutical industry. Along with the company
also have strategic ambition to become carbon neutral by the year 2050. therefore, Warren
Bennis has listed four leadership competencies that leaders must possess that is-

person that works in an organisation or expert will be hired from outside. After this both
alternatives will be considered and one of them will be selected. After selection of alternatives
entire training will be divided into small parts. A way will be determined in which training must
be given to the managers. After completion of training; specific topic evaluation will be done. In
evaluation it will be identified that training was given as per predetermined guidelines or not
(Wheatley, 2010). If not then necessary steps will be taken to make correction in training
delivery methodology. Along with this if managers felt that anything needs to be added in the
training program then modification can be done to the training program. Evaluation of training
program will be done continuously in order to make sure that training is given in legitimate

Through preparing the PDP it can be assessed that the stated objectives needs to be

need improvement in various aspects and thus for that appropriate training needs to be attained
so that skills can be enhanced. However, it has been identified that my communication skills has
been evaluated and it will reviewed after 3 months of assessment. It helps me to communicate in
a proper way with team of scientists. In order to make it really happen I conduct meeting with
different scientists. Therefore, conducting meeting will scientists support the GSK company in
improving their services and innovating new medication that focuses on carbon neutral. This
help me in understanding technical aspects of project and its impact of firm profitability. Such
kind of strategy help me in understanding concerns and suggestions in systematic way. Now
project cancellation reduce by 60% which positively affect the business firm. Further, it is also

plan so that accurate goals can be attained. I need to set specific requirements of the plan that
helps me to accomplish desired targets. There are different areas in which I lack and thus I need
to undertake effective training sessions in order to overcome my weaknesses. Also, appropriate
skills need to be developed so that conflict can be resolved easily. The main outcome to set
against the specific requirement of plan is to enhance reduce project cancellation probability by
80-90%. Moreover, main outcome that I set against specific need of plan is to enhance ROI by
30%. In relation to communication there is specific requirement of modification that need to be
done in plan. In this regard, I will try to listen whatever message communicated by the scientists
with full patience. There is specially a need to bring change in the plan that is formulated in
relation to strategy formulation. In this regard, I will enhance my knowledge level and skill in
relation to use of various models like SWOT, PESTEL and Porter five forces model etc. All

improving the individual skills so that set targets can be attained in an effective and efficient
way. Through updating the leadership development plan it encourages me to enhance my skills
which require improvement and thus enhance my personal development plan to attain success.
Leadership development plan that was developed earlier needs to be update. As addition
now I will try to listen messages communicated by scientists carefully. I will prevent myself
from interrupting them during communication process. The main point is that a panel of specific
number of scientists will be prepared. Each time whenever I will intend to do any sort of
communication with scientists this team will arrive in my cabin. This strategy will help scientists
in understanding the way in which they must communicate message to me so that I interpret
same in right way. Such kind of strategy will make communication more effective between me

attempts are also made to make sure that employees’ health will not deteriorate due to working in
its facility. Hence, employees of Glaxosmithkline are working with full dedication towards
achievement of an organisation objectives. Glaxosmithkline understands this thing and it due to
this reason time to time commence new employee welfare activities at the workplace. As a
result, employees are satisfied from Glaxosmithkline top management (Heckman, et.al., 2010).
Over past year, mentioned firm grow at a rapid pace and this happens due to full cooperation
from employees’ side. In this way, it is proved that corporate commitment on to staff welfare has
a positive impact on achievement of company objectives. However, many times this not
happened and even management do lot of social welfare activities for employees. Nothing

positive is observed in employees performance in terms of productivity and efficiency. Thus, it is
not necessary that welfare activities always give fruitful results.
A.C. 4.2:- Impact of staff welfare environment on achievement of organization objectives
Staff welfare environment put a large impact on achievement of organisation objectives.
Good staff welfare environment outs a positive impact on organisation objectives. In order to
achieve an organisation objective an input from each and every employee is required. This input
must be in equal manner. If in an organisation working environment is not good and employees
suffered from diseases then hundred percent outputs cannot be received from them. Hence, it
becomes very difficult for an organisation to achieve an objective (Lusardi and Mitchelli, 2007).
Inverse to this if welfare programs are run in an organisation then firm will have healthy
workforce and it will give its maximum effort in achievement of an organisation objective. These
welfare activities also increase employee engagement at the workplace. Due to high level of
satisfaction employees remain engage in their tasks and with dedication they perform their job.
Hence, good social welfare environment facilitate achievement of an organisation objectives. By
conducting employee welfare programs their medical check up is done and if there is any matter
of concern then it is communicated to the relevant employees (Baicker, Cutler and Song, 2010).
Hence, employee takes treatment on time and they do not need to take leave from their work.
Thus, work life of an employee’s remaining balanced and they are able to give their full
cooperation to the management in achievement of an organisation objective. From above
discussion it can be said that staff welfare environment has positive impact on achievement of
organisation objectives.
A.C. 4.3:- Impact of commitment to employee welfare on organization value system
There is a very close relationship between employee welfare and organisation value
system. In an organisation there is a family in which all employees working in an organisation
are covered. Employee welfare activities make organisation value system more strong. Due to
employee welfare activities there are less chance of accidents. This is because firm provides all
sort of equipment that assures employees that their life is safe while working in an organisation.
Due to employee welfare activities working conditions in an organisation also get improved. As
a result, satisfaction level of an employees get increased (Schein, 2010). All these gives confer
strength to an organisation value system. Moreover, these programs also reduce rate of absence
of the employees at the workplace. All these things indicate that a firm or management values

each and every person that is working in an organisation. There is no discrimination on the basis
of salary, caste, creed and religion. These activities give a message to the employees that an
organisation is always with them and treated as its valuable asset (Selznick, 2011). This makes
company value system good in the eyes of the employees of an organisation. Hence, they give
their hundred percent effort towards achievement of an organisation objectives.

Leadership acts as pioneer for an organisation. It paves a way of growth for an
organisation. Hence, leadership is a heart of an organisation. Firms must make sure that
employees are receiving good leadership in an organisation. In respect to this 360 degree
feedback can be taken from the employees. As per results of feedback training can be imparted
to the employees at the workplace. Employee welfare activities give a lot of benefits to an
organisation. Hence, firms must time to time conduct such kind of activities at the workplace.
