INTRODUCTIONGlaxosmithkline is operating in a UK pharmaceutical industry. This industry is verycompetitive in nature and in this report mentioned firm is selected for understanding aspects ofleadership and training. In this report, a process of leadership development plan is given. Furtherits implementation process is also given. After that deviation is identified by comparing actualtraining results with standard objectives. Further, reasons of such deviation are identified andways are suggested that can be followed in order to achieve training objectives. At the end of thereport, employee welfare program is discussed in detail and an attempt is made to identify allpositive impacts of employee welfare program on an organisation. As a manager I think thatskills are core to success of any organisation. In order to ensure that organisation will haveappropriate skill set I will prepare a personal development plan. This plan will be used todevelop skill set of the employees. Ultimately, organisation will grow at a rapid pace.Executive summaryAs per annual report the vision of Glaxosmithkline make available good quality ofmedicines in order to give quality of life to human beings. In respect to this company is givingdue attention on commencing new research and development projects. For completing a visioncompany is continuously involve in developing new medicines. Currently, also company isoperating many projects on its research and development cell that are located in several nationsof the world. Moreover, it is also increasing its research and development team in order to ensurethat it has sufficient amount of intellectual capital to complete projects within deadline. Thisshows management commitment towards production of innovative medicines. In this directioncompany is making excellent efforts from past few years. Company main objective is to increasepeople access to health care services all over the world. In this regard also firm makesinvestment in several geographical areas across the world. Along with this management of thementioned firm is also promoting welfare culture at its workplace. In respect to this, company isorganising several welfare activities time to time at facility. In order to achieve this vision ofGlaxosmithkline business needs to focus upon its research and development department so thatinnovative vaccines and biopharmaceuticals has been introduced (GSK. 2014). There are twokinds of strategies namely deliberate and emergent strategies. Mintzberg argued that strategymust be seen in wide perspective. According to him, deliberate strategies are those tactics thatcomes in existence due to intention of the management (Glaser and Strauss, 2009). With the changing business environment the company changes their vision, mission andobjectives of the pharmaceutical company. The key vision, mission and objectives supports thecompany in attaining the strategic direction that supports them to sustain in the long run. Mission- The key mission of Glaxosmithkline company is to become the leadingscience-led global healthcare company in the pharmaceutical industry. Along with thisanother mission of GSK is to focus on their employment practices so that staff within thecompany may feel valued and even respected and empowered at the workplace. Company's Vision- Along with this the vision of company is to improve the quality ofindividual lives through providing innovative medication, vaccines as well as health careproducts. Furthermore, the objective of Glaxosmithkline company also ensure change inthe value chain that is they ensure company to be carbon neutral by the year 2050. Aims and objectives- The key aims and objectives of the pharmaceutical company is toimprove their research and development department so that they can innovate in themedication so that they may be able to prolong pipeline of the medication that issignificant for the treatment and care of the service users. Along with this anotherobjectives is to meet the expectation of society and community through offering themlow dose medication. From the above both the strategies pharmaceutical company must focuses on thedeliberate strategy that ensure formal planning that ensure accomplishing the vision throughemphasis on systematic formulation of strategies. Therefore, it is essential formanagement of GSK to develop effective strategic direction in regard to generate future salesgrowth through supplementing strength in the pharmaceutical business. Business need to provideinvestment in fast growing areas such as vaccines and consumer healthcare so that success canbe attained.Another strategic direction of GSK is that it focuses upon developing technicalknowhow. In March 2015 firm formulate a strategy and complete a three stage transaction withNovartis which reshape firm business. Glaxosmithkline purchase Novartis vaccines business andcombined both firms consumer healthcare business to form new firm. This was the firm actionplan or strategic direction for fluffing vision. At same time it is also observed that some of theprojects of the relevant firm are cancelled because from long same were in progress but desiredresults were not obtained from them. As per Ashby's law of equisite variety it helps in providingsufficient internal variety and an upper limit for the amount of variety that can be tolerated.Another strategic direction for GSK is that it design step by step therapeutic area in which itintends to launch medicines. Then it prepares a plan for R&D activity and by implementing thesame, it launches drugs in the market (Bass and Riggio, 2006).A.C 1.2:- Strategic skills required by leader to achieve strategic ambitionsStrategic skills required by the leader involves conflict resolution skill, negotiation skill,coaching/mentoring and influencing skill etc. that helps them to contribute to attain strategicgoals. As per the view of (Grime, 2006), leaders within GSK undertakes varied skills such asconflict solving and negotiation skills so that success can be attained. Further communicationskills is crucial which needs to be improved my leaders. Developing all such skills helps leadersto encourage them to work effectively and efficiently. However, (Wheatley, 2010), argued thatleaders of GSK lacks in assessing the specific skills required to accomplish the strategicdirection. From the above identified aims and objectives of the company GSK must focuses onproper direction therefore, the leaders required certain skills for attaining the strategic ambitionrelated with attaining the leading position in pharmaceutical industry. Along with the companyalso have strategic ambition to become carbon neutral by the year 2050. therefore, WarrenBennis has listed four leadership competencies that leaders must possess that is-Page 5 of 21

Forming a vision of the company that support the people in bridging the future so thatthey can easily accomplish the objectives. Enabling proper communication so that leader gives meaning to vision.Another leadership competencies from Bennis include building trust among the staff andemployees so that it may be possible for them to work within the organization. The last competencies focus on searching for self regard and self knowledge. Along with this, Kets de Vries has also focuses on the eight strategic leadership roles that arerequired by GSK leader in order to achieve the strategic ambition. The leadership archetypemainly include the strategist that ensure leadership as game of chess. Another is the changecatalyst that concentrates leadership as change of mind activities. After that it ensure leader asthe transactor that showcase leadership as deal making. Example of leadership also includeleader as the builder under which leaders are regarded as entrepreneurial activity. Furthermore, italso act as the innovator in which leader mainly concentrates on generating the new ideas andthoughts. While, the leader within GSK is also termed as the coach that ensure leadership as thepeople development that support in development of staff and their employees. The last archetypeof leadership include leader as the communicator that indicates the leadership as stagemanagement.Thus, leaders are focuses upon undertaking strategic formulation skills it assists leadersto attain success. Leader need to develop various skills in order to improve their capability tomanage business situations. Hence, GSK aims to improve the skills and abilities of their leaders in regardto attain strategic objectives such as introducing vaccines and biopharmaceuticals and capturelarge market share. Also, a panel of persons being selected that involves research executives,external advisors etc. who needs to perform effectively in terms to attain business targets.Further, it is essential for GSK managers to make effective communication skills so that they candevelop effective communication among top and middle level management. Four skills that leader needs to develop in next year Many times project gets closed due to wrong anticipation about the profitability or delayin project completion.
