INTRODUCTION
Skill development is required to ensure development in terms of both personality and
professionalism which helps in getting better career opportunities. The present report is based on
reflection upon own management and leadership skills through Kolb’s reflective model. Also,
the skill auditing and personal SWOT has been performed in order to identify personal strengths
and shortcomings. Accordingly, personality development plan has been created for better
performance in the future. Secondly, various transferrable skills has been explained along with
the associated theories and their application in real organization context that is, Walmart.
TASK 1
Reflect on own management and leadership skills using range of models
Management: Management is upper part of the organization who is liable for managing,
motivating and keeping employees satisfied with the positive workplace environment.
Leadership: The leadership is an action that a leader of the organization needs to adopt in order
to lead and guide their team members or group of people. For this, the leaders can adopt different
leadership styles such as transactional, transformational etc (Bintani, 2020).
Reflection on my management and leadership skills using Kolb’s reflective model:
Concrete experience: I am unable to manage and lead my group at the time of group
assignment the impact of which my group assignment gets delayed. This is a situation, where I
realize that my management and leadership skill is poor (Chiu, 2019).
Reflective observation: In order to identify my specific poor management and leadership
skill, I have conducted my own reflective observation. The impact of which I able to get that my
leadership, presentation, problem-solving, time management skills are poor which I need to
develop in myself.
Abstract conceptualization: In this stage, I have found out the different ways through
which I can develop leadership and management skills in self. In this stage I have also identified
that where I have enough resources with myself or not in order to achieve the same objective
(Chiu, 2019). I will prepare personal development plan specifying which skill I need to achieve,
what resources I needs and the timeframe within which I will achieve this objective.

Active experimentation: Finally, at the last stage, I will start executing the plan which I
have prepared in previous stage. I will daily practice the skills I need to develop, I will also
regularly attend the course etc.
Personal SWOT analysis helps an individual in order to analyse strengthen and weakness so that
it can improve it. Along with this, it also contributes in meeting with the competition in the
work place.
Strength: My strength is that i have good communication skill that has helped me in interacting
with others as well as sharing my thoughts and idea. Along with due to this skill i am able to
provide and maintain proper flow of information. Although this skill is very much important in
workplace environment as it helps interacting with them (Budiman and Chu ,2021). In addition
to this, my interpersonal skill is also good that has helped me in building relationship with peers.
This ability is also important in management as it contributes in building positive environment in
company.
Weaknesses: Throughout the session i have analysed that my problem-solving skill is not good
as i am not able to find innovative idea for the issues. Due to this, i have faced delay in my
assessment (Consortia and et.al., 2021). Along with this, my time management skill is also not
good and due to that i am not able to divide my task according to work. It is very much
important skill in company as poor skill will lead in delay of task. Although i have to build my
concentration skill so that i can understand the task easily without getting distracted. It will
result in completing my work on time and effectively.
Opportunity: Through the assessment i have analysed that i have an opportunity to expand my
skill by joining certified online course. This course will help in providing with theoretical
knowledge and practical (Kurzman, Badshah and Rozanne, 2019). Moreover, in have gained
knowledge during the assessment that in leadership and management it is important to have both
experience of practical and theoretical. In addition to this, in order to learn about management
structure and work i will be joining internship programme so that i will be able to get the
experience of work life. In addition to this, for developing my personality i will be taking online
lecture so that i can build confidence. I will also participate in group project in order to improve
my presentation ability that will help in communicating my thoughts properly.

Threat: The major threat that i can face is new variant of COVID due to that various
organization has not permit work. Along with this, another issue that i can face is lack of finance
and due to that i will not able to join online course. Moreover, my impatient ability has affected

TASK-2
Transferable skills with respect to relevant theories
Supportive communication
It can be defined as a support given in terms of both verbal & non-verbal form while
carrying out communication with that individual who is facing stress, physical or emotional
distress, heartbreak or any other distress causing factors of the life. Therefore, it can be said that
such kind of communication is required for supporting those are in need of it. The necessity of
this skill is felt at the time when negative feedbacks are delivered or shortcomings are pointed
out, so that there will be no negative impact over the relationship existing among
communicators.
There are eight principles given by Whetten & Cameron for establishing supportive
communication, which are as follows:
1. It should be congruence rather than incongruence: A statement made during conversation need
to focus on honesty & the message itself which in turn needs to be matching with feelings and
thoughts.
At the time of recommendation one need to say like “There is a need to change your way of
communication” rather than saying that “Change your way of communication, otherwise
disciplinary actions would be taken”.
2. Communication is needed to be descriptive rather than evaluative: Comparison of one with
another should be avoided by placing focus on the main objective. Comparison is needed to be

avoided because it results in discouragement and on the other hand descriptive explanations
facilitate recommendation of changes in behaviour for better performance.
3. Orientation on problem rather than person: Emphasis should be placed on issues or problems
rather than focusing of people or their characteristics.
4. Validation instead of invalidation: Respect, flexibility and collaboration should be emphasized
within communication.
5. Not global, but specific: Specific behaviour and event should be pointed out rather than giving
general statements.
6. Not disjunctive, but conjunctive: For better understanding, whatever statements made in the
present should have link with previous statements.
7. Owned rather than disowned: Statements should be owned where the communicator must took
the responsibility of what has been said by them through stating “I” within their statements.
8. No one – way listening, but supportive listening.
Walmart, by ensuring that there would be supportive communication within their
organizational culture are able to enjoy several benefits such as problem solving in speedy way,
better conflict management, high quality output and higher productivity accordingly. They have
ensure supportive communication by including it within their organizational ethics.
Motivation
Organizational development is necessary only when required level of motivation is provided to
the employee. The eagerness, behaviour and strength to achieve the assigned tasks could be
enhanced with the provision of incentives for motivation. Management always try to understand
those factors which acts as a motivation for the employees because they are responsible for
ensuring that whatever tasks has been assigned would be completed in an efficient and effective
manner and accordingly, sufficient level of motivation is necessary.
Hierarchy of needs is the motivational theory given Maslow who have categorised overall human
needs into five different categories, such as the following:
Physiological needs: It involves the need for shelter, food, sleep and clothing and is considered
to be the most important for the biological survival of human. Only when this need is satisfied,
human body can function optimally.
Safety needs: Need for safety and security include support from society & family members. For
instance, financial & emotional security.

Belongingness need: Need for belongingness and love involves better interpersonal relationships
and affiliation.
Esteem needs: It involves the need for self – worth and self – respect of oneself and becomes
active on satisfaction of earlier needs.
Self – actualization needs: Seeking personal growth, self – fulfilment and realization of own
potential are some of the need of an individual at this level.
At Walmart, several motivational tools are used in the form of financial and non- financial
incentives for making sure better organizational performance. The financial incentives include
salary increment and bonuses while the non-financial incentives includes job enlargement and
rotation & employee recognition from time to time.
Empowerment
It is associated with claiming rights and controlling life for the benefit of oneself which makes an
individual more confident and stronger. Empowerment facilitates power extension which
facilitates completion of assigned tasks in addition to provide support & equality made for them.
Walmart gets benefited from employee empowerment where the management are able to obtain
higher level of contribution from their employee which in turn helpful for it in the
accomplishment of set goals and objectives. It facilitate high morale, sense of responsibility and
better quality of work from employees.
A theory given by Kanter with regard to employee empowerment which states that
empowerment is required to be promoted at workplace through the provision of accessibility of
organizational resources, support from superiors, opportunity to develop and learn &
information. Kanter argued that power sharing is possible through empowerment at workplace
and it has been identified that those working for empowered managers are empowered
themselves.
At Walmart, empowerment has been ensured through obtaining input from employees at the time
of decision making which results in effective decisions and accordingly, improved performance.
Conflict management
The practice which helps an organization to deal efficiently with managing the
conflicting situations in a sensible and justified manner can be referred to as conflict
management.

The Dual concern model of conflict management states that people try to resolve a
conflict based on two factors which either involves the concern for their own self or the concern
for others. Based on this theory of conflict management, there are five types of conflict
management, namely, collaborating, avoiding, compromising, accommodating and competing.
All of these helps in resolving the situations related to a conflict within the organization or
between people. For instance, there are various kinds of conflicts that arises in an organization
which requires the employers to implement different strategies in order to resolve the issue.
Similarly, within Walmart, many times it has been found that various employees of the
organization are not satisfied with the company policies related to the work practices. In such a
situation, the company must follow the strategy of accommodating the employees by resolving
their issue (Turner, and et.al 2020.). A few times, it has been observed that the employees are
unable to understand the point of view of each other which results in the creation of a conflicting
situation. For resolving the issue, the company needs to make them understand the value of
collaborating and working together. The main advantage of applying this theory within the
organization is that they will develop a sense of flexibility within themselves and increase the
organizational capabilities.
Team effectiveness
The potential and the prospective ability of a team in order to obtain the organizational
objectives with respect to a company can be referred to as team effectiveness.
The GPRI model of team effectiveness states that there are four parts which can help a
team in bringing effectiveness. It takes mutual efforts of each and every member of the team in
order to enhance the productivity of the team. GPRI refers to goals, procedures, roles and
interpersonal communications. The model states that in order to bring effectiveness within a
team, it is important for the organization to first clearly state the goals to the entire team, assign
them with their specific roles, then set out the procedures in which they will accomplished and
lastly interact with each other in order to collaborate the efforts (Ahani, and Dadashpoor, 2021).
Most of the businesses face challenges with implementing this model because they start with
interpersonal communication to the goals. According to Beckhard, this is not the right way of
thinking.
Similarly, if the Walmart wants to enhance the effectiveness of its team it firstly needs to
communicate the goals with the team such as increasing its sales by 20%. Then allocating the

roles which are to be followed by each and every department such as marketing department
needs plan activities which helps in increasing the sales of the company and finance needs to
make sure that not a single department falls short of the money and set out procedures and
communicate in order to work collaboratively for the purpose of achieving the goals of the
company.
CONCLUSION
From the above the report it can be concluded that reflective practices should be carried out
from time to time in order to ensure further skill development in an individual. In this report,
reflection on own management and leadership skills has been performed through Kolb’s
reflective model and accordingly, skill auditing, personal SWOT analysis and Personality
development plan has been carried out. Furthermore, the explanation with regard to transferrable
skills has been done along with applying it in terms of how organization are inculcating these
skill by taking an example of Walmart.
