INTRODUCTION
Growth and development are two important aspects of everyone's life. In order to
grow and develop at the initial stage during academic studies an individual is require to have
a personal development plan (Abad, 2020). Personal and professional development plan are
the strategic plans which are prepared for the development of an individual on the basis of
their goals. The personal and professional development plans are two different concepts but
both the plan requires a goal to be achieved by an individual with the help of this project.
This report is going to discuss about the concept of both personal and professional
development. On the basis of the plan which has been prepared for both contains three types
of goals. This report also going to discuss the short term, long term and medium term goals of
an individual which they have formulated to achieve their personal development plan. It also
contains three examples of each goal which further provide for the description about the
personal development plan of the individual.
MAIN BODY
Meaning of professional and personal development
Personal development refers to the development of an individual on the basis of their
personal objectives. It contains the goals of an individual which they want to achieve for the
career growth in a particular field. Whereas professional development refers to the
development plan of an individual which has been designed to upgrade the professional skills
of an individual which are required in their professional life or in an organisation. The main
difference between personal development plan and a professional development plan is that
personal development plan has been prepared by an individual for themselves to achieve their
personal objectives whereas the professional development plan is prepared by an organisation
for their employees to help them to achieve the organisational goals. So many times
organisations are requiring to develop several professional skills in their employees which
they require to provide them in order to make them efficient for the work assigned to them.
This requires the organisation to develop professional development plan for their employees
in the organisation. As the personal development plan is prepared by an individual
themselves it is required by them to set a proper goal. These goals are the objectives of an
individual they want to achieve in their personal life (Amatan, Han, and Pang, 2021). In order
to make the goals achievable they are divided in three types that are short term, long term and

medium term goals. The value of these goals in life of an individuals with three examples of
each are given below.
Short term goals and its examples
Short term goals are the goals of an individual which are set by them for relatively
shorter period of time. These goals include the skills of an individual which requires 3 to 5
months approximately to be developed. Each and every skill have their own complexities
which is depend on the mental level of an individual. That is why every individual have
different short term goals and the skills of an individual are divided on the basis of time
period taken by an individual to achieve the goal. Short term goals are very essential for a
PDP of an individual in order to make their long term goals achievable. Short term goals are
the goals which are formulated to achieve the long term objective of an individual. These
objectives help the individual to keep themselves motivated with the milestone they achieve
with the achievement of their short term objectives (Bintani, K., 2020). There are several
examples which can be considered in this short term goals of an organisation. The examples
of short term goals of an individual are given below:
To improve my Communication skills.
To effectively enhance my Time management skills.
To develop my presentation skills
These are the essential skills which generally takes a very less time to develop but are
very essential for an individual to develop themselves in every field of work. An individual
should always develop new short tern goals after completion of the one so that they can be
able to grow and develop themselves in a continuous basis. Short term goals have a great
value in the life of an individual as it helps them to develop essential petty skills which are
important but generally not focused by an individual.
Medium term goals and its examples
Medium term goals are the goals that are formulated either for the shorter period of
time than the long term goals and longer period of time than the short term goals. The target
set to achieve these goals is generally for 3 to 6 months. Although these types of goals are not
so popular among the individuals and are not focused by them but every individual has their
medium term goals (Demirdöken, 2021). These goals are the bifurcation of long term goals in
shorter period goals to effectively achieve the long term goals. These goals are very useful for
short term goals as it helps an individual to divide their long term goals in such a short period
of time. These goals include attainment of skills of an individual which takes generally more

time than the short term goals. There are various examples which helps to understand the
value of medium term goals of an individual.
Development of leadership skills.
Became a manager in a reputed organisation to gain management experience
Management of stress
The above given examples of medium term goals helps to identify that the goals of
medium term are designed on the basis of long term and short term goals of the individual.
These skills which are mentioned above will generally takes three to six months to be
developed in an individual. These medium term goals are essential to convert long term goals
of an individual in short term goals in effective manner. These goals help an individual to
keep themselves motivated towards the longer term goals (Gatan, Yangco, and Monterola,
2021).
Long term goals and its examples
The goals which an individual want to accomplish in the future to succeed in the
personal and professional life. These goals are formulated by an individual with proper care
as it provides a base for the other goals of an individual. These goals define the final
destination of an individual they want to reach in their professional and personal career.
These goals are very essential for an individual for their self-improvement and give shape to
the life and career of an individual. The long term goals provide a base to the medium term
and short term goals. The skills and goals which are considered in long term goals are to
achieved by an individual in more than 6 months but less than 3 years (Golder, and Stevens,
2020). Long term goals are sometimes confused with the life goals of an individual but both
long term and life goals are different from each other. These long term goals are divided into
smaller parts to formulate medium term goals of an individual. These medium term goals
then divided into smaller parts to create short term goals. It is a creative process and requires
a critical analysis of the long term goals to divide them in medium term and short term goals.
The three examples of these long term goals of an individual are:
Graduation in business management from a reputed university.
Opening a new business as an entrepreneur
To develop fluent English to handle the clients.
These long term goals of an individual will help them to became a successful
entrepreneur. As it is goal of an individual to open a new business and became an effective
entrepreneur of that business. These goals help an individual to create a bridge between

where they are and where they want to be. These goals are generally defined by an individual
by saying “I want to become”. By this they provide an idea about the field an individual
chooses for their career (Kamaruddin, 2020). Like in the present example an individual want
to became an entrepreneur which shows his career to be in business.
Value of PDP
PDP refers to the plan which has been developed by an individual for their
development and growth in the career. There are three types of goals which can be considered
at the time of preparation of personal development plan (McRae, 2020). Generally personal
development plan contains the skills and goals which are formulated for medium and short
term by an individual as these are the goals which helps to achieve the objectives in effective
manner. In the below given development plan the first goal which has been considered is the
presentation skill. The presentation skill is very important for an individual who has a long
term goal to became an entrepreneur. In order to achieve this skill, the development plan is to
involve in more and more practice in front of mirror and peers which will help to develop
confidence to present in front of a large audience. The next skill in the plan is the time
management skills which is very important to complete the work in a given deadline. In order
to became a good entrepreneur, it is essential for an individual to provide the work to the
client on a given deadline. In order to develop these skills a proper planning of task is
required and a person is requiring to divide their day to day work with a time frame and try to
complete the work in that given time frame. This will help the individual to develop their
time management skills. The third skill in the personal development plan is to improve the
leadership skills. In order to became an effective entrepreneur, an individual should work on
their leadership skills. Leadership skills include development of various skills and requires
more time than the other skills to be developed mentioned in the personal development plan.
In order to improve these skills an individual is require to take experience from a job to be at
a position in management which will help the individual to gain required skills and
experience from the same. This personal development plan is very valuable for an individual
because it create a roadmap for them to achieve their long term objectives and goals so that
they can be able to achieve the desired success (Pastor, and Baruffaldi, 2020).
Conclusion
The above discussion helps to conclude that personal and professional development
plan is an essential part of life of an individual. It includes development of various goals
which provides an effective direction to the life of an individual. A personal development
