Reflection:
-Why it is important as it relates to a CYC practitioner working with children, youth and
families.
-What I plan to do with the knowledge I gained from the article/ video.
-Consolidate the knowledge and skills I acquired from the artifact to the domain to a
CYC profession.
-Generate questions and ideas to propel future learning
I realized that being a child and youth care worker, it is vital to understand the needs of the
children and maintaining professionalism both in interacting with the children and in treating and
caring for the children and youth. Understanding the underlying causes and etiologies of an
unacceptable behavior is very much important and any unacceptable behavior that is hindering
the care process should be eliminated. Developing a positive attitude in the child for positive
growth should be done with reassurance, rapport-building and responding to the exact needs of
the children. The appropriate and professional attitude should be showed by the CYC worker in
every stage of the process (Land et al., 2018).
I have learned the importance of understanding the factors that lead to disruptive behavior which
are child having trauma experiences related to a social or cultural scenario, socialization levels,
any cognitive delays, attitude, perception, ego awareness and strength, fear, fatigue. This can
improve the care process.
Document Page
It is critical to note that once I learn the underlying factors of disruptive behavior in the child, I
would be able to control my judgments and bias towards a more child centered professional
approach.
The question is – ‘does judgment and bias of the care worker hampers the care process and
professionalism?

I learned that through working with these age groups and social groups - the problems with
ideas, preconceptions, perceptions and the attitudes about racism can be explored. The video
showed that more white-skinned children had negative perception about racial interaction than
the dark-skinned individuals.
I can use motivational interviewing with the parents to change their perceptions and negative
attitudes towards the African American communities so that their children do not form the
implicit bias about the African American children.
The knowledge and skills that I acquired from the artifacts that black-skinned children was more
open to interaction with the white skinned children and how semi-structured interviewing can
help as skills techniques – can be used in the social psychology and cultural diversity. Finally,

using play based semi-structured interview – the knowledge and skills can be applied to Child
and youth care profession. More interpersonal empathy building exercises can be used to build
good relationships between the white-skinned and the dark-skinned children.
The question is - what are the other biases and preconceptions that shape the racial ideas of the
child and youth?

I learned that to provide a holistic and complete, profound care to the children – understanding
the needs of the children is crucial As it stands, the various aspects of the social, psychosocial
care being delivered to the child and youth is based on strong relationship building with the
teachers in the school, with the peers in the school and with the parents plus other elders at home.
I learned that a holistic care is critical to the caring of the children, development and growth of
the children in terms of social skills such as acceptance, respect for diversity and resilience as
well.
I can apply the knowledge to develop stronger relationships of the children with his or her social
surroundings. This would also better the therapeutic relationship.
I feel that interpersonal communication skills along with cultural competence and cultural
awareness in addition to cooperation, motivation and rapport building are critical for the
consolidation of knowledge and skills from the artifact to the domain to a CYC profession.
The question is that how symbolic interactionism and non-verbal communication are important
in shaping the lives of the child and youth.

I learned that ‘serve and return protocol’ is critical in order to develop a strong relationship with
the children or rather to create an effective relationships between the children and the parents so
that they are more driven towards learning and knowledge (Schneider et al., 2019). It is critical
to have a strong, compassionate and warm communication with the children so that they develop
their social and relationship management skills more properly.
I would use both the verbal and non-verbal aspect of my communication skills effectively to
motivate, engage and empower the children with positivity and positive feelings towards others
in the surroundings, especially towards their peers and families.
I can consolidate the correlational knowledge about the child needs and the environmental
hazards as a CYC worker so as to understand the biological and environmental barriers that
limits communication, interaction and relationship building in the children and this is how, the
skills will be consolidated.

I learned that immediate carers of the children such as the other elders in the family of the
children should be involved in the care process for children with certain mental health
conditions. DSM -5 has come up with new diagnose home that includes two critical conditions
that would help the parent understand the signs and symptoms as well as the communication or
cognitive barriers of their child (Mann-Feder, Scott & Hardy, 2017). I learned that social
communication disorder that is also known as SCD and disruptive mood regulation disorder. The
precise diagnoses should also be learned by the CYC workers to develop more accurate care
plans.
I will at first involve the family of children into the diagnosis, assessment in order to then
involve them that is the family and careers of the child into the care process.
Document Page
I will consolidate the knowledge gained from DSM -5 to understand the signs and symptoms in
the child before reaching a diagnosis.
The question is how to screen the children and the youth from the conditions that has many
critical and vast overlapping areas.
