Personification is seen as a symbol of speech through which human characters are given to an object,
idea or an animal (Nolan, 2015, p. 57). The non-human objects are offered the authority to feel as if they
have human characters. For example, in the conversation The Katha Upanishad, death has been
personified. In this paper, I will discuss the reasons as to why personification of death will make a better
teacher to Nachiketa based on the nature of wisdom she is looking for.
To begin with, death serves as a teacher we all can learn from. Everyone is always afraid of thinking
about death. Each person is scared of death. People look at life and turn away from any haunting
memories associated with mortality (Karl Andriessen, et al., 2018, p. Online). From the Katha Upanishad
conversation, the personification of death serves as an appropriate teacher to the nature of wisdom
Nachiketa is looking for. Death will willingly impart liberating wisdom to the young boy. His view of life
can dramatically change if he sees the end in the streets of his father's capital. Through, observation, the
boy can get to learn useful lessons from Death.
Secondly, life presents limited opportunities for everybody. It is upon the person to make use of them
wisely. Life is very short. It is, therefore, one's actions which determine the person's destiny. At some
moments, one gets opportunities to upgrade their life activities towards their dream comfort. Nachiketa
has such a chance though under a complicated situation. Because of a mistake that the Lord of death
had made, the young boy was given three boons (Nagler, 2007, p. 33). The boy can use the blessings
wisely not only to increase to acquire knowledge but also to get liberation as well as help his father who
wronged him to live in peace. This will make a significant improvement to the boy's wisdom.
To add to the list, in times of adversity, one’s character speaks more (Jayaram, 2018). Due to
unavoidable circumstances, Nachiketa felt the displeasure of his father. His father openly told him that
he was to give him to death, this never terrified him. He went to visit Lord Yama and patiently waited for
him for three good days. He has proved to be hard to the temptations and distractions that death has
offered to him. This will impress the Lord so much until he gives the young boy his respect and favors.
The boy might be young, but due to his stoicism and serenity, he is highly prepared for various
occasions. Due to his inner purity and moral behavior, he will be able to maintain his stand and
determination of seeking for wisdom. , Commitments to the truth, character, and conduct are essential

components of life, especially during hard times. As the boy has all this, it will be easy for him to expand
his wisdom.
In conclusion, the personification of death will be an appropriate mentor to Nachiketa in his journey of
searching for wisdom. As it is, everybody is there to perform various duties even at the end. Death is just
a door to another existence. In death, there is a hidden process of renewal, new opportunities, and
peacemaking. One’s duties proceed provided liberation has not been attained.
