1PHARMACOTHERAPY
Introduction
Mr Jason is a 57-year-old person admitted to the intensive care unit for three days with
the complaint of severe joint pain due to a sudden fall. Mr Jason has some medical histories and
physical issues. The patient after admission has shown heart rate 93 beats per minute, respiratory
rate 25, blood pressure 140/92, oxygen saturation 96 per cent and pain rating 8/10. Based on the
vital signs and the physical condition, it has also been seen that the person was overweight. Mr
Jason has a medical history of high blood pressure, osteoarthritis and hyperglycemia. The person
was unable to move frequently, and thus he was isolated in his house. Mr Jason lives alone, and
because of his physical condition, it has been seen that he is depressed as well. The patient was
administered with Etodolac 200 mg, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug for pain relief by his
general physician. Moreover, Metformin 500 mg was also prescribed for the patient. Other than
theses, Mr Jason has been prescribed with Metoprolol 10 mg for checking his hypertension.
However, as the patient lives alone, it has been found that the patient did not take medicines
properly as per his general physician’s highlighted dose and time. In the following section, the
issues and the medication needs of the patient will be discussed with consideration of the
medicine actions.
Pharmacotherapeutics
Mr Jason has prescribed with Metformin 500 mg for his diabetes and Etodolac 200 mg
for pain relief. The Metformin is considered as an antihyperglycemic agent, and the medicine
would be administered through the oral way as it is a tablet. The medicine reduces the
insensitivity of the body towards insulin. It also helps in the reduction of glucose production by
the liver and also reduction of the glucose absorption in the blood (Cho et al., 2015). Hence,

2PHARMACOTHERAPY
Metformin is the medicine which controls the effect of the blood glucose level or the
hyperglycemia of the patient, and it has several dosages among which Mr Jason was prescribed
with 500 mg dose (Arvindekaret al., 2015). On the other hand, Etodolac is the non-steroidal anti-
inflammatory drug and relieves pain. Mr Jason has been prescribed with this drug due to his
osteoarthritis. This drug inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme and also reduces the synthesis of
peripheral prostaglandins which produce inflammation (Brune & Patrignani, 2015). It also found
in different dosage and the patient has been prescribed with 200 mg dose. Moreover, as per his
hypertension, he was also prescribed with Metoprolol10 mg. This medicine limits the cardiac
excitability and cardiac output by inhibiting the beta-1-adrenergic receptor and negligible effect
on the beta-2 receptor (Swadi et al., 2019).
Present complaint
In the present condition, the person after fall feeling extreme pain and his blood pressure
along with blood sugar level are high. Thus the dosage of the medicines would be elevated for
the relief of the patient and also he would be prescribed with D3 vitamin as it can be able to
support the osteoarthritic condition of the patient (Garfinkel, Dilisio & Agrawal, 2017).
However, the depression of the patient is also a concern and hypertension, and the
hyperglycemia is the major concerns as well. The factor of the osteoarthritis should be
considered as one of the major issues for the patient. However, there is a factor of the rising vital
signs as well along with hyperglycemia. Hence, proper diagnosis, including X-ray and blood
tests required for the determination of the complaints of the patient and also for the development
of the intervention plan (Mendes et al., 2015). The medication of the patient should be
considering the issues of the patient and also the management of the physical, psychological
sector. On this context, the requirement of hypertension and hyperglycemia control is very much
