Similarities and Differences in Reality

This assignment analyzes three philosophical works exploring the nature of reality: The Matrix, Plato's Republic, and Descartes' Meditations. It highlights similarities and differences in how each work portrays individuals doubting their perception of reality. The Matrix uses a computer system, Plato's Cave uses human manipulation, and Descartes explores the influence of demons. 1. After reading the Synopsis of the Matrix, Plato’s the Republic and Meditation of
Descartes, it can be said that there are similarities and differences both. In all of the
stories the persons were doubtful of what is the reality. Each of the individual of the
stories wants to believe that the things they are sensing is only the reality. The differences
in these stories are that The Matrix was accessed by a computer system, Plato’s cave by
mankind and Descartes by the evil perceptions of demon. While comparing The Matrix
and The Plato’s Cave it can be seen that the individuals try to face the person who is
manipulating the peoples (Plato, 1886). In both the stories the individuals doesn’t know
anything about the reality but only about the world in which they are living. In matrix the
individuals are captured and kept in a pod and are feed with images which helps them in
keeping in a dream world (Wachowski & Wachowski, 1999). Similarly, in Plato’s cave
the individual’s were bound in chains from the childhood and are shown some shadow
which they were made to believe that they were real. Now while comparing between
Descartes and The Matrix it can be seen that both the stories are based on the current
reality. In both of these stories the individuals are captured and are separated from the
real world. For Descartes it is controlled by evil demons, where as in The Matrix it is
controlled by a super computer.
2. According to Descartes, everything inside us inherited from the ancestors. He believes
that God has some existence in this world. God had provided us with senses and mind
through which we used to think, believe and do our work (Descartes, 2013). Further by
using the law of reality it can be stated that for creating something the creator must put
more reality in the creation. If the people believe that god is real then they can depend
upon the reality of their senses.

3. At the end of the allegory cave, Socrates says that it is very much difficult to turn from
the darkness of the cave towards the sun light. But I believe that it is totally an
individual’s personal choice, whether he will stay in a virtual world or in the real world.
According to me I will choose the harshness of reality (Descartes, 2013). Because it is
better to stay in the world of reality than to live in a virtual world.
4. After reading the stories my opinion is that since most of our knowledge is defined by the
experience of our senses, so we must not be sure about that all of our beliefs are true. But
when we work together we can provide a base to our understanding. This understanding
will depend upon the feelings along with our senses and it will help us to decide that we
are moving towards the truth. I feel that working at episteme itself will help a person lead
to moving close to the beautiful, truth and the good (Descartes, 2013). Different people
have different beliefs for a particular thing and it cannot be considered as a truth. So, it
can be said that different people have different perceptions about the same thing. By
believing the senses a person will be able to provide a perspective of an item or a
scenario.
