BRFSS Questionnaire
Physical Activity Questions (BRFSS 2001-2009) – the color red is my answer.
1. We are interested in 2 types of physical activity - vigorous and moderate. Vigorous
activities cause large increases in breathing or heart rate while moderate activities cause
small increases in breathing or heart rate.
A. Now, thinking about the moderate activities you do in a usual week, do you do
moderate activities for at least 10 minutes at a time, such as brisk walking, bicycling,
vacuuming, gardening, or anything else that causes some increase in breathing or heart
rate? (Circle one)
YES NO If no, skip to question 2
B. How many days per week do you do these moderate activities for at least 10 minutes
at a time?
____7_ days per week
C. On days when you do moderate activities for at least 10 minutes at a time, how much
total time per day do you spend doing these activities?

INTERNATIONAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY QUESTIONNAIRE (IPAQ)
We are interested in finding out about the kinds of physical activities that people do as part of
their everyday lives. The questions will ask you about the time you spent being physically active
in the last 7 days. Please answer each question even if you do not consider yourself to be an
active person. Please think about the activities you do at work, as part of your house and yard
work, to get from place to place, and in your spare time for recreation, exercise or sport.
Think about all the vigorous and moderate activities that you did in the last 7 days. Vigorous
physical activities refer to activities that take hard physical effort and make you breathe much
harder than normal. Moderate activities refer to activities that take moderate physical effort and

work, and any other unpaid work that you did outside your home. Do not include unpaid work
you might do around your home, like housework, yard work, general maintenance, and caring
for your family. These are asked in Part 3.
1. Do you currently have a job or do any unpaid work outside your home?

4. Again, think about only those physical activities that you did for at least 10 minutes at a
time. During the last 7 days, on how many days did you do moderate physical activities
like carrying light loads as part of your work? Please do not include walking.

Total Physical Activity Scores
An overall total physical activity MET-minutes/week score can be computed as:
Total physical activity MET-minutes/week = sum of Total (Walking + Moderate + Vigorous)
MET- minutes/week scores.
This is equivalent to computing:
Total physical activity MET-minutes/week = sum of Total Work + Total Transport + Total
Domestic and Garden + Total Leisure-Time MET-minutes/week scores.
As there are no established thresholds for presenting MET-minutes, the IPAQ Research
Committee proposes that these data are reported as comparisons of median values and
interquartile ranges for different populations.

Summary Report
The IPAQ results are a little lower than those of BRFSS. The reason for this may be that it asks
specific questions about the physical activity routine of an individual. As a result, the IPAQ
results are more conclusive than those of BRFSS (Ainsworth et al., 2006). On the other hand, the
BRFSS questionnaire additionally asks about the anaerobic activities of individuals. IPAQ does
not have questions on the muscular strengthening activities of a person.
My IPAQ results do not meet the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The
guidelines encourage adults to move more and sit less throughout the day. However, my IPAQ
results show that the number of hours I spend sitting is higher than that spent engaging in any
physical activity (Brown et al., 2004). Although my week moderate physical activity is higher
than the recommended values, I do not undertake the required vigorous activity.
For substantial health benefits, the guidelines recommend individuals to do at least two and a
half hours of moderate physical activity a week or around an hour of vigorous physical activity.
The American guidelines encourage adults to do muscle strengthening activities of moderate or
greater intensity involving all muscle groups at least two times a week. My BRFSS value for
Document Page
21
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
muscle strengthening is three times a week which is higher than that recommended by the
guidelines (Bennie et al., 2020). The guidelines also recommend individuals to engage in over
300 minutes of moderate physical activity a week to achieve desired health benefits of exercise
(Hallal & Victora, 2004). I need to increase the amount of time I engage in moderate activities as
well as to do more vigorous aerobic activities to be considered active enough.
My activity level is much lower than that of people of the same age. This difference is still
mainly due to my low engagement in vigorous physical activity. Therefore, in order to be
considered physically active according to the guidelines, I need to participate more in vigorous
physical activities in a week. However, care should be taken to ensure safe exercising to avoid
risk of injuries. My chosen physical activities should be appropriate for my current level of
fitness and health. I should also aim at increasing the time and intensity of physical activity
gradually over time to meet the recommendations of the guidelines.
