2PHYSICAL SECURITYIntroductionCrime is perceived as a social issue in our society that affects the lives of thousands ofpeople every year. By tradition, the community has relied upon the judicial system and the policeto dissuade the criminals and thus, punishing the accused. Now, Crime Prevention throughEnvironmental Design [CPTED] is a concept that affirms that the homeowners, architect,community, planners and security professionals can play a significant role in safeguardingthemselves as well as the community from crimes by incorporating CPTED principles into themanagement of physical environment (Crawford & Evans, 2017). Crime Prevention through Environmental Design [CPTED]The concept of CPTED is relatively new and has become a significant strategy to preventcrime that is used by law enforcement agencies, architects, security professional, planners andthe citizens. The underlying principle of this concept is that a proper and effective use of the builtenvironment can reduce the occurrence of crime and improve quality of life. The concept ofCPTED purports to reduce crime opportunities that may be inbuilt in the design or structures ofthe neighborhoods (Cozens, 2016). In order to implement the CPTED designs, it is important tounderstand the purpose of the space and how appropriately does the physical design realize thegoals of CPTED. The strategies of CPTED acts as guidelines that encourage the designprofessionals to resolve the urban security related problems issues.
