1PHYSICAL SECURITY IN RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITIES
Introduction:
The purpose of this paper is to analyze how physical factors of security is essential of a
residential community. The papers also attempts to explain how implementation of modern
physical security features can be imbibed in residential areas based on the kind of people
inhabiting the locality. Therefore, this paper explains of how factors of physical security should
be addressed with equal importance as compared to technological securities.
Research Topic:
The factors of physical security is often overlooked in the modern generation because
individuals have become more prone to the technological attacks that looms like threat over
every person who has accepted a technological way of living (White, 2014). Physical security is
an important aspect for residential areas because people are equally prone to physical crisis as
they are prone to the technological security breach (Fennelly & Perry, 2016). Providing safety to
the residents of any community is an important step towards controlling problems such as
burglary, theft, vandalism, fire and also terrorism. Keeping a proper time to time check on these
factors helps a community from keeping all the residents safe from unknown intruders. (Lee et
al. 2014)
This research paper will be helpful to understand that a society or a residential area is
composed of various individuals who come from different backgrounds (Galster, 2013). There
are people who fall in the ordinary section of the people and some under the category of social
elites (Perugini, Hölscher & Collie, 2015). Individuals who fall in this section of the population
always have an eye of others on them and they are prone to several physical attacks attack by
people who may or may not have any technological knowledge (Gibson & Greene, 2013).

Overlooking these crisis situations can even prove to be fatal. However, imbibing proper
physical security equipment like security alarms, biometric gates, CCTV cameras and fire
suppression systems become helpful in enhancing residential preservation.
Research Overview.
Physical factors of security provide individuals safety from unauthorized intruders who may pose
a threat of damaging private property and life. Different scholars have given their different views
on how primitive physical factors were enough to provide safety to the residents of residential
estates. According to Crouch (2014) physical arrangements of residential security helps to
protect individuals from various kinds of crimes, thus providing them to live in safe
environments. However, this has been argued by Nordin (2015) that proper physical securities
are able to protect elderly people from meeting any kind of accident that can prove to be harmful
for them. Child security is also another factor which has to be kept in mind while designing the
physical security arrangements of any residential area (Kendrick, 2013), which include that can
include proper electrical wirings, covered septic tanks and clean play grounds free from any kind
of sharp hanging materials. Theft and burglary are also important factors that has to be kept in
mind while making parking areas, proper fencing (Roberts & Block, 2013) Strong doors and
window panes fall under an important category while trying to control any kind of private
property breach (Van Camp & Procton, 2015). Watchmen and private police constitutes another
factor of physical security during a case of a sudden emergency (Yurko, 2014). CCTV cameras
in busy as well as remote locations of the locality or the residential campus is also mandatory for
keeping a track of what is happening in different parts of the area at all times (Piza, Caplan &
Kennedy, 2014). Assigning guards in every corner of the building would make the affair

expensive and it will also not be sufficient while providing word of mouth as an evidence after a
crisis situation. (Tedong, Grant & Wan Abd Aziz, 2015)
Problem Statement
The research paper attempts to highlights the points that regardless of all the security
arrangements made to enhance the security of individuals of a residential area, there have been
cases of several residential crisis (Xin & Huang2013). There are some aspects of such crisis that
can severely damage the lives and properties of individuals that sometimes become incorrigible
(Kraus, Vondráčková & Nývlt, 2017). CCTV cameras are not kept under constant surveillance
which result in the cameras working as a mere video recorder and the footages are only used
after an incidents has taken place (Wright, Glasbeek, & Meulen, 2015). Lack of fire
extinguishers in the building make it difficult for the residents or even the security personnel to
control a fire situation (Oh, Jiang & Panganiban, 2013). Many residential estates do not have a
proper inter-com facility where communication can be made easier to avoid a wastage in time
during a crisis situation (Kuzlu, Pipattanasomporn & Rahman 2015). Technological
advancements prove to be effective when they are being utilized in the right way. Therefore,
sound knowledge of using various equipment should be imbibed to the security personnel in
order to enhance the security systems (Albayrak, Özdemir & Nuri Kültür 2013). Budget is also
one of the important constrains that develop while inducing several security measures. Individual
collection of money from residents for the proper maintenance of residential estates also enhance
the security of a building or an area by investing on the necessary security arrangements need for
the specific locality.
Residential buildings that have taken the status of skyscrapers do not have proper security
management that would provide the required amount of support during natural calamities like
