Plagiarism and Referencing
Plagiarism: It refers to unethical way of using or copying someone else's idea
or opinion without giving them proper credit for their work. In academic
writing process, it involves taking author's words, ideas or opinion without
properly acknowledging their efforts by using citations correctly. For
example: Plagiarism can take place in different industries such as academic
field, business world, Arts field, Politics and can also takes place in
entertainment industries.
Different Types of plagiarism:
As discussed above,
Plagiarism is an illegal activity which
involves copying of words or
information from the copyright sources
pretending to be one's own idea or
thought. The following are different
types of plagiarism in the world of
academic writing: -
Direct plagiarism: This type of plagiarism is done intentionally by
the writer. It involves copying parts of the information made
by another writer without altering even a single word. In this
the plagiarist can also replace some of the words with his
own and can change parts of the sentence which also falls
under crime of plagiarism.
Mosaic plagiarism: This type of plagiarism is performed
unintentionally by the writer. In this case, the plagiarist
mentions the relevant source of information but fails to
consider the quoted part or properly putting under the
quotation marks.
Accidental plagiarism: This form of plagiarism is generally done
accidentally by the writer. In this, the plagiarism can happen
if the writer misunderstands the paragraphs taken from the
source material or unintentionally cites a wrong source of
information.
Self- plagiarism: It is one of the common types of plagiarism in
which generally high school students copy-paste the parts or
segments of information from their previous research papers
without taking permission of the relevant authority.

Academic integrity: It is the step towards eliminating the methods which leads to plagiarism
and helps the writer to find new and unique ways of writing content in a proper manner.
Along with it, It allows the writer to recognize appropriate sources of information and
giving correct recognition of someone else thoughts and ideas by doing proper citations

The presence of proper citations shows that writer have been careful and rigorous in his
academic research.
It helps the reader to easily access any external material of content that the writer has
discussed or stated in their academic writing.
It helps to eliminate the chance of plagiarism as it involves doing proper citations of the
content taken from another source.
Properly referenced material provides with high quality and authenticity of the
information to the readers such as published article in a respected journal.
It also helps the reader to gain extra knowledge about the author of original material.
Harvard Referencing style:
Properly citing the idea or
information of other party can make the
quality of research more impactful to
readers. The Harvard style of
referencing helps in crediting the
original source of information in the
form of direct quotes, paraphrases or
statistical figures. The process of
Harvard referencing follows author -
date system and includes the following
steps of Harvard referencing style:
In text citations: It is one of the step of Harvard referencing style which
involves inserting the author's name and publication date in the main body of
report or research paper. Moreover, if the publication date is not provided than
the phrase 'no date' is followed by writer. In-text citations help the reader of
information to know which information came from another source which helps in
improving relevancy of information. For example: There are number of ways to
do in-text citations in case of one or more number of authors like (Yang,2015).
Full references: It is generally written in the end of research paper in the form of
alphabetical order. Along with author and date of publication, it gives full
bibliographical information about the referred sources of information. For
example: the referencing can be done with the help module websites, Forum
messages, e-books, published journal articles, newspapers and web pages.
