SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH
The water consumption through plastic bottles though popular among current
population but has certain harmful effects. The main harmful effects of plastic bottled water
are: Water reacts with plastic bottles and produce toxic substance like fluoride, aluminium
and these toxic components are injuries to health once consumed. Plastic packaging cast
significant threat of the environment as plastics are not bio-degradable. Direct exposure of
plastic water bottles under sun produces dioxin and when consumed can cause breast cancer.
Plastic bottles produce biphenyl A, as estrogens mimicking chemicals which cause health
problems like obesity, fertility, diabetes and early puberty. Chemicals from plastic bottles
harm the immune system of the body (Van Der Linden, 2015).
As an alternative to plastic bottle packaged water, tap water can be consumed. Tap
water is not only good for health but also good for the environment. It is also a cost-effective
options in comparison to packaged bottle drinking water. Consumption of tap water is good
for skin, tastes good and reduced health risks (Van Der Linden, 2015). However, there are
certain reasons behind the popularity of plastic bottle packaged water bottles in comparison
to tap water. Few reasons are mentioned below.
Word of mouth: Public faith has decrease from the quality of the tap water. The
reason behind this is verbal reported stories of death occurring due to the drinking of tap
water. Fake reported stories of leakage in the water supply pipes of the tap water and the
question behind the hygiene of the water coming from underground (Debbeler et al., 2018).
The conspiracy theory mainly goes with the manufactures of the plastic bottled packed water.
The manufacturers spread popularity of plastic bottle water either via word of mouth or
through advertisements in favour of packaged drinking water. This is done intentionally by
the manufacturers in order to increase their profit margin. The conspiracy of the
manufacturers created an environment that packaged drinking water are good for health and
rich in minerals (Debbeler et al., 2018). Family traditions are also responsible behind the
