INTRODUCTION
Peter Squires is a professor of Criminology & Public Policy is considered as the
dedicated and committed criminologist which is specialised in the field of gun crime. He
began working in the University of Brighton in the year 1986 and was promoted as the
professor of the Criminology & Public Policy. He has actually graduated in the field of
Sociology and the social policy and completed his PhD in 1985. He has acclaimed the awards
for his research work in investigating the gangs, gun crimes along with the youth offending
(Professor Peter Squires. 2020). Peter Squires major area of interest and contribution is
criminology, gangs, gun crime, policing, cross cultural criminology, anti-social behaviour
and criminalisation, firearms control, youth crime and weaponization. He has carried out
research and consultancy with others like Sussex and The Metropolitan Police, the East
Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, the European Forum for Urban Safety, London Boroughs
and the Youth Justice Board. In the year 2003, he was opted onto the Home Office Firearms
Consultative Committee because of his hard work in the stream of firearms and the crime. On
the recent, he has joined the ACPO as an independent advisory group in relation to the
criminal cases.
Contribution in the development of policy or understanding of policy
Peter Squires has developed different policies which has helped in promoting public
safety in the nation. For example, he has research on the influencing policies on the gun
crime and the CCTV for promoting the public safety. The criminology research being done
by Peter Squires has changed the national and the European policy and practices on the
public safety. This evidence based research after being submitted to the UK home Affairs has
directly impacted the legality, policy guidance and innovations pertaining to tackling the gun
crime along with creating an effective firearms control (Squires, 2010). Another research
stands on the implementation of the CCTV surveillance cameras in the Urban areas. This has
led to the installation of the 8 separate CCTV cameras which impacted the research and the
evaluation of the project. It has received funding of £115k from the public sector
organizations between the years 1994 to 20020 in London and the South East. The
examination has an impact on the EFUS strategy and practice, as it had recognized
unreasonable expectations in relation to CCTV impacts upon wrongdoing and disorder and
exhibited the function of proper assessment in effective and accountable public policy
development.
