Political Advertising and Media during Elections
Election is a process in which population of that territory chooses an individual. The
individual is chosen in order to hold public office for the entire population of that territory. It is a
group decision-making process, which is based on consent of each person in a population
through their vote. Election can happen be for a small territory or a very big territory. Usually
election is referred to choosing a person to hold public office for working of entire nation. It tells
about the presence of democracy in the nation. These are called the political elections, as they
focused on choosing a leader to lead the entire nation on political basis (Falasca & Grandien,
2016).
Political elections happen after a fixed duration of intervals and its features differ from
country to country. When a country calls for the political elections the representatives of the
public, who are selected to be the leaders arrange election campaigns. Election campaigns are the
campaigns that are considered a means of presenting ideas on prevailing issues in that country by
the political parties; those are the complete team of selected representatives of the public (Le &
Yalcin, 2018). These campaigns are done in order to influence the voters to vote for that
particular political part (Initiative, 2019).
Election campaigns can be done in many ways. Hence, the representative’s political party
has different ways to reach to its respective voters. In order to transfer their messages to its
voters, political party can use traditional and modern ways of mass communication. These
methods can be traditional and new media, written materials, public events and many other
means. The period of campaign has usually allotted as one month or several months before the
actual elections.

In the 2015 and 2016, a very big campaign took place named as UK Brexit Campaign
(Vasilopoulou, 2016). In which UK tried to influence its people for giving their vote in favor of
being separated from European Union. It uses various means of campaigning to influence UK
people. this campaigning was very big and long also and raised so many issues in order to get
votes to separate UK from European Union (Hantzsche, Kara, & Young, 2018).
For these campaigns, to each political party fixed areas and periods are allotted, so that
they clearly can transfer their message to public without getting confused with other political
parties. These allotted months are legal in nature and they get assigned physical place for
carrying out various campaign related activities. The period between completion of legal
campaigning period and starting of actual elections is known as black out period in some
countries.
In political elections and campaigning processes there comes a term named as lobbying.
Lobbying simply means persuading someone to get authorized benefits for themselves
(Dictionary, 2019). In terms of political elections and campaigns, lobbying refer as persuading
public to vote for the respective political party. It is authorized in nature when only legal means
are used. Moreover, it can be done only on behalf of that selected representative of the public.
The methods of lobbying can also be off various types. It can be done through advertising using
videos, audios and print forms (Progress, 2018).
In this essay an effective analysis of political elections with reference to 2016 US
presidential elections and 2016 Australian elections with their campaigning and lobbying
activities are analyzed in detail (Beckwith, 2017). This analysis is based on political advertising.
For this use of new social media methods is going to be analyzed. On the other hand, the media

coverage and reportage regarding 2016 US and Australian election are going to be examined and
analyzed.
On 8 November 2016, the 58th presidential elections of USA held. In these elections the
Republican Donald Trump in the popular vote lost to Democrat Hillary Clinton by 2.8 million
votes, however he won the decisive Electoral College and 30 states with 304 electoral votes on
the other hand Hillary Clinton got 227 votes in total. This leads Republican Donald Trump to
become the 45th president of United States (Barber, 2017).
Earlier in 19th century’s US presidential elections candidates were used to advertise for
their campaign by providing speech to small group of people by travelling from place to place.
1930 and 1940s a new way of campaigning and lobbying stared that is broadcasting. This covers
the masses at a single time (Du, 2017). Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first US president who
used TV and broadcasting for election and success. Then after that other candidates in coming
years stared using influential ways for their election campaigning and lobbying process. A great
example of these campaigning get cleared from 2016 US presidential elections (Win, 2019).
The 2016 US presidential campaigning established some political norms that were unique
in American history. The main norm and basis of Hilary Clinton’s campaigning mainly featured
the fund-raising and in favor of superior organizations. On the other hand, Trump’s campaigning
is the anti-Washington appeal to the voters, which mainly belong to major pivotal manufacturing
states and are white working class people. This influential appeal by Trump leads to his victory
(School, 2016).
The various campaigning methods and techniques used by both candidates of 2016 US
presidential elections were influential. Some agendas often set by trump in order of coverage of
