Economic outlook: Nigeria is a middle-
income country, mixed economy and
emerging markets. Nigeria has one of the
best economy in the Africa and also is
ranked as 27th largest economy in the
world in terms of nominal GDP.
Currency: Naira
Main exports of Nigeria: Mineral fuels,
Ships, boats, Cocoa, Oil seeds, Fruits,
nuts, Aircraft, spacecraft and Fertilizers
are some of the main exports of Nigeria.
Nigeria officially known as Federal
Republic of Nigeria is a sovereign country
in West Africa. Nigeria is most populous
country in Africa and second most
populous in world with around 206
million inhabitants.
In its health system several improvements
has been undertaken by the government of
the country but there is sufficient scope for
improvement in healthcare services. In
Nigeria since 1950 major improvements
have happened in relation with health.
Along with different types of diseases
malnutrition, pollution are other threats to
health of Nigerians.

Life Expectancy: 53.95 years is life
expectancy in Nigeria.
Infant Mortality rate: Infant mortality
rate in Nigeria is 59.181 per 1000 live
births
Fertility rate: As of 2020 fertility rate in
Nigeria is 5.281 births per women, this
has reduced 1.27 decline from 2019
Death rate: As of 2019 death rate in
Nigeria is 11.771 per 1000 inhabitants
and this has reduced 1.620% from 2018
Health expenditure: Health expenditure
in Nigeria is about 5.7 billion naira and
this is 3.756% of GDP of Nigeria.
National insurance policies: there are
several national insuarances policies and
national health insurance scheme,
midwives service scheme are some of the
schemes for insurance in Nigeria. Other
than this, Nigerian national
immunization coverage and pay for
performance scheme are also there in
Nigeria. About 90% of Nigerians are not
covered by any form of health insurance.
Patient to doctor ratio: There are 4 doctors for
per 10000 inhabitants in Nigeria whereas global
average is 32 doctors every 10000 doctors. In
terms of ratio it is 1:2500.
Medical tourism: Nigerians spend millions of
Naira travelling to access health care outside
Nigeria. This is about 1 billion US dollars
equivalent to 20% of government’s expenditure
on health. And lack of doctors is one of the
important reasons for this because patients have
to wait for hours for the doctors.
Presence of disease: there are several diseases in
Nigeria and among all other diseases lower
respiratory infections, neonatal disorders
and HIV/AIDS are top most reasons for death in
Nigeria. Other than these, polio, malaria and
tuberculosis are also there in Nigeria. Other
diseases in Nigeria that are cause for death are
neonatal disorder, meningitis, cirrhosis, ischemic
heart diseases and strokes are included. Although
compared to other African countries HIV, AIDS
are much lower in Nigeria.
The environment: Nigeria’s delta region is home of
large oil industry and has experienced serious oil spills
and other environmental problems.
Culture: Nigeria is a multinational state and has
inhabited by more than 250 ethnic groups speaking 500
languages and has several types of cultures in the
country. National languages of Nigeria are
Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo and its official language is
English. Other than this, largest ethnic groups in
Nigeria are Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo.
Nigeria is a country that has made effective
improvement in their health s€ystem but there is scope
in this that needs to be addressed by the country and
government.
