PURSUING A VISION THROUGH ACADEMIC GOALS Techniques for comprehension and retention Comprehension is basically the technique as well as ability for processing the text and understanding is meaning in depth. Retention is the ability of individuals to remember a particular thing for long period of time Reading out loud This is one of the most effective method of comprehension which students can utilize for improving their memory. According to the studies, it has been found that when students read a particular topic loud then it eventually improves their memory and helps them to retain the topic for longer period of time. When students will speak the text of books loud enough instead of reading it silently then the dual impact of hearing as well as speaking eventually will help them to encode the meaning of text. Importance of goal-setting Goals are basically the ideas as well as the desired results which an individual sets for achieving success in career. It is highly essential for the students in university to set definite goals in their career as it helps them to unearth as well as identify that what will help them to excel in the future. Besides this, goal-setting is also important because it helps the students to develop themselves and build their self-efficacy. There are generally two types of goals namely short term goals and long term goals which students set in their life. Short-term goals are the one which the students have tom achieve in near future and thus will be accomplished within short period of time. For example- the students might want to achieve the higher grades in their next semester or in the next assignment. Besides this, another short-term goal might be to learn the new subject within few weeks or months. The main advantage of setting short term goals is that it helps the students to develop a momentum for improving themselves and for achieving their long term goals. On the other hand, long term goals are the one which students commit to achieve in the future and thus will accomplish in the long period of time like in 2 years or 5 years. For example- the major long-term goal of students to join the renowned organization after completing graduation. Another long term goal might be to become CEO of the company in future and give back to parents. The main advantage of long term goals is that it provides a big picture to students which eventually provides them the right direction. Story-telling is best This is considered as the most effective strategy and technique of retention which helps to increase then learning power within students. Instead of reading the subject matter in a normal way, when students learn it by linking it with their personal life then they are able to better understand the meaning of topic and also helps in retention of the subject. Thus, when students will link the topic or subject which they study with a story or will have the emotional connection with it then it will eventually help them to understand subject more deeply and will help to in longer retention.
