2ITECH 1100: POTENTIAL IMPACT OF 3D PRINTING ON GRAPHICS DESIGN
Research
Designing is the process that can offer assistance in development of an adequate
system or product and is the reason for its adoption at not just an industrial level but at a
global level also. The subject of the paper “Graphics Design” can be defined as the process of
problem-solving and visual communication with assistance of one or multiple illustration,
photography and typography. The discussed subject in simple terms can be considered as a
tool to communicate ideas by means of diagram made through computing software or
through physical effort. However, the discussed subject can enhance further advancement by
use of disruptive technologies such as the 3D printing, BCI (Brain Computer interface), IoT
(Internet of Things) and multiple others. 3D printing is the technology that under the
computer control assists in printing (joining of material or solidifying) of products. The
impact of the 3D printing on the Graphics Design industry has been considered as an
objective of the paper and based upon it the following sections has been discussed.
Brainstorming
3D printing has assisted in mitigating the time that was consumed in designing the
graphics for a particular offering by over a 100% which is viable for the organisation
and especially for its employees.
Manufacturing industry is the biggest client of the design industry and the
introduction of the 3D printing has offered prominent benefit to the former. Nokia,
Tesla and others are a few names that has started the use of discussed technology.
Integration of the Brain Computer Interface (BCI) with the 3D printing will amplify
the impact of discussed technology.

Regulations & ethics
The impact on the increased productivity of the graphics design employee has been taken as
the source for further discussion.
The Intellectual property (IP) law holds for the 3D printing which are well-defined to
the organisational employee and hence is a factor that supports the impact of the
technology.
The mass adoption of the 3D technology in the organisations have made it evident
that the architecture of the discussed technology is simple and enabling factor which
can be adopted by anyone. Additionally, recent news has shown that the technology is
used by the general public which proves simplicity of its architecture.
As the previous discussion suggests the capital invested in the adoption of the
technology and the return offered by it makes it a supporting factor for the impact.
The use of the technology in consideration makes it possible for the employee to copy
an object even without proper authorisation from the object owner which gives birth
to ethical constraint for the discussed impact.
Disruption
The process that will be the subject of discussion is the designing and to manufacturing
process. In a traditional designing and manufacturing process of the organisation, the
activities that are part of the process are the project briefing with client, evaluating client’s
ecosystem, brainstorming the message & needs, sketching the mock-ups, building the design,
presentation & refining of the design according to the client (variable), establishing the
design for manufacturing and finally manufacturing. The event as a whole is the designing
and printing of a product according to the client. The decision points that are part of the
process is the approval of design from the client. The actors that are part of the process are
the designers, client and the system while the outcome of the scenario is the designing and
