The objective of this week’s topic is to make sure you have a broad
understanding of commercial planning and commercial projects.
Try to ask yourself the questions that were posed in the 1st week’s lecture :-
1. What is a Commercial Planning? Commercial planning is the
strategically management of a new project for the benefit of all
the individuals
2. What is a Commercial Project? A commercial project is the
construction of a structure mainly for purposes of business. They
may include hotels, hospitals and retail shops.
3. What role does Commercial Planning and Commercial Project
Management have in the project, program, and a portfolio hierarchy?
Commercial planning is vital in a given project. This is because it
is through it that project goals are set in place in addition to
setting timelines for different project milestones. This also
ensures that there is proper allocation of resources through the
different areas of the project. And proper coordination of the
whole project.
4. Are there any essential keys for success between the participants of
large scale projects? The approach used in a large scale project
always varies. However the essential part in those kinds of
projects is for the project manager to ensure that the different
sections in the project work in synchronisation. This means that
different sections in a large project has to have team leaders

who frequently update the overall project manager on the steps
that are being carried out in their sections to ensure that the
whole project will achieve its goal.
In the Wikipedia article and the other readings for the Channel Tunnel
(Chunnel); Project try to explain:-
5. How much negotiation would have occurred during the project? The
Channel Tunnel a massive project that occurred whereby a rail
was built linking the United Kingdom with the Northern France.
The rail tunnel is 50.5 kilometres. This underlines the fact that
the project of the tunnel is considered massive. The fact that the
tunnel links two countries indicates that there were so many
negotiations to be held before the commencement of the
project.
6. Who would the negotiation have been between? The negotiations
took more than ten years and were led by the heads of state in
both nations.
7. Would successful negotiation have mitigated any of the subsequent
outcomes? The negotiations had alot of drawbacks such as in
1975 where Britain opted out of the negotiations due to financial
constraints. That issue couldn’t be resolved in the negotiating
table because it was more of an internal affair.
8. What would have been required to undertake successful negotiation
between the parties? For a successful negotiation between the
countries, there had to be a specified agenda and the benefits
that both of the nation’s stood to benefit from the completion of
the project.

most participants assess what they stand to benefit first.
11. What is your overall conclusion of the paper? In conclusion, For the
