A Reflective Essay about Effective Communication & Improving Performance, &
how this influenced my Performance, behaviour & experience
This piece of reflective writing utilises Driscoll’s model of reflection (1994). Here I will
discuss my experiences at work/in education (WHICH OF THESE TWO DO YOU
WRITE ABOUT? WORK, OR EDUCATION?) where I demonstrate effective
communication, and the process that enabled me to improve my performance, in the
table below:

enabled you to improve performance because
of effective communication
What is/was the Purpose? During my education, I has undergone an internship in an
MNC where effective communication was very essential.
The task provided to me was very challenging as I have
never done it before.
What happened in the
event/scenario? From the very first day, I got the idea how its going to be.
Everyone in the organziation were very fluent in their
communication and I have to report my work to the head
of teh department which putted a lot of pressure on me.
What did I see/do during the According to teh task given to me I had to gather relevant
data from the different personnel which requires effective
communication. Also, in case of any query, I had to
communicate to the deputy manager for resolving and
helping me.

What was my reaction to it? On day two, I was given my first task, of which I had no
idea and I was required to do it my self and apply my
thinking. This puted a lot of pressure on me and also I was
very nervous in communicating with the other employees.
What did other people do that In my organziation, communication was mostly done
orally if someone wants to communicate. Written
communication was used by top management. In the
organziation, direct communiaction system wa stehre so
anyone can effectively communicate to each other
irrespective of the position.

in written communication, everyone was there to help.
Also, there is a training course for employees to enhance
their communication skills.

How did I feel at the time of
the event?
At first, I was feeling very excited at teh
sam etime very nervous as it was my first
corporate exposure. My major concern
was that whether will be able to
effectively communicate to everyone or
not and show my presence in the
organziation.
Were those feelings I had any
different from other people
who were involved at the
time?
Other students who joined along with me
were having the same feeling in respect
to communication.
Are my feelings now, after the
event, any different from what
I experienced at the time?
After completing my internship, I got
some sort of positive feeling in terms of
skills I got. Also, I was able to identify my
weak points, thus, I started working on
my communication skills with the
guidance of teachers and friends.
Do I still feel troubled, if so, in
what way?
Now, I am very confident in
communicating with anyone which has
changed my perosnality.
What were the effects of what
I did or did not do?
My main objective was to show my
presence which was done through
effective communication. I used to
communicate very confidently to
everyone which has boosted my self
confidence.
What positive aspects now
emerge for me from the event
that happened in practice?
This event has helped me in identifying
the areas of improvement and has also
provided me with the direction. This
event has for sure helped me improving
my communication skills and confidence.
I have been recognized by the head as
the best internship of the year.
What have I noticed about my
behaviour in practice by
taking a more measured look
at it?
The most important aspect I noticed
about me was that I am not introvert. I
used to communicate with other
employees of other department very
