About This Document

This presentation discusses the importance of evidence-based practice (EBP) in health and social care, highlighting its role in improving patient outcomes and decision-making. It explores the purpose and process of EBP, the skills required for conducting a literature review, and the importance of research in nursing and EBP. The presentation also includes a case study on conducting a literature review and a project proposal on the influence of communication skills on outcomes in health and social care. The value of literature review in influencing positive change and the impact of personal learning in the workplace are also discussed. Finally, the presentation emphasizes the value of research in developing cost-effective interventions and the role of innovation and improvement towards evidence-based practice.

Importance of Evidence-Based Practice in
Health and Social Care
Evidence-based practice (EBP) in health and
social care deals with critical thinking and
proper evaluation of the data in order to
evaluate effective yet efficient treatment for
the healthcare service users.
Application of the EBP in health & social care
helps in highlighting the clinical priority and
thus helping to design person centered plan
(Brownson, Colditz and Proctor 2018)
EBP in health & social care helps in improving
patients’ outcome and increase the process of
difference decision-making
(Kelly et al. 2015)

Purpose and Process of EBP in Health & Social
Care
The purpose of EBP in health & social care
is to improve the process of clinical
decision making by using the current yet
reliable evidence.
The purpose of EBP helps to reduce the
chances of trial and error in healthcare and
to promote a standardized healthcare
approach
The standardized healthcare approach
helps to reduce the chances of error while
improving the healthcare outcome
The process of generating EBP in health &
social care is done by reviewing or
summarizing randomized control trials. The
randomized control trials (RCTs) fall under
level of 1 research paper hierarchy.
Apart from RCT, other primary studies are
also reviewed in order to generate EBP in
health and social care.
(Kelly et al. 2015)

Why Research Matters in Nursing and EBP
Research plays an important role in the
profession of nursing. It helps to improve the
overall quality of the research in order to
promote evidence-based practice.
The evidence-based practice is guided by five
basic steps:
1. Asking a question against any particular
concern
2. Search for the answer
3. Critically appraising the articles fetched for
answering the questions
4. Proper implementation of the findings in the
practice
5. Evaluation of the overall results or the
outcome of the change implementation
(Brownson, Colditz and Proctor 2018)

Skills and Qualities required for
conducting Literature Review
The first skill required to conduct literature review is to critically
analyze the methodological quality of the primary research
The steps required for the conduction of literature review are:
Selection of the research topic/research questions
Selection of the keywords and inclusion/exclusion that will be used
for the search of the articles in the databases
Selection of the databases that will be used to search articles
Search of the articles in the databases
Filtering out the articles based on redundancy, title, abstract and
basis of the methodological quality
Selection of the final set of articles and conduction of the review
The methodological quality of the article is accessed by the use of
the critical analysis tools like CASP or JBI.

Own Skills and Knowledge for
Conducting the Review
My own knowledge about
conducting the literature
review is to provide a
summative over-view of
more than one papers.
My skills of conducting the
literature review include
proper synthesis of the
data by using
grammatically correct
writing skills
My skills also include use
of PRISMA chart in order to
tabulate the process of
filtering of the research
articles found through the
database research

Skills Required to Conduct Ethical Research
Having proper knowledge of ethics of autonomy, beneficence and
non-malefience
Giving credits to the authors of the primary research whose paper
will be cited
Not hampering the interests of any authors whose papers are
selected in the review.
Other interest in the research ethics of an author include
responsibility, competence, integrity and honesty (Golder et al.
2019)
